T61 Wireless N

#1 Post by AlanC » Wed Oct 28, 2009 7:49 pm

Hello,

I have a 14.1 inch Thinkpad T61 (7658-02U) with an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG wireless adapter.

I'd like to upgrade the wireless to 802.11n.

What's the best way to accomplish this and what's the deal with the 3rd antenna?

Thanks for your help!

Alan

Hi,

Two options:

Thinkpad Intel 4965 AGN
Thinkpad Atheros AR5BXB72

Both are easy to find on ebay if you look for the above text. Make sure you get one that says it's suitable for a Thinkpad or it probably won't work (ie, without a modified BIOS, plus taping pin 20).

The Intel one seems to be about 1/2 the price of the Atheros one, but I personally prefer the Atheros.

I believe the 3rd antenna allows a theoretical max. of 300 Mbps, while with 2 antennas, the theoretical max. is 150 Mbps. Not 100% sure on that one though.

Cheers,
morkli.

Just saw this thread:

Looks like you can get 300 Mbps with just 2 antennas too.

Cheers,
