"magic packet" / wake on lan function utility?

#1 Post by llama_thumper » Tue Feb 15, 2005 8:43 am

I have put my T40P in standby mode, with wake on lan enabled in the bios.
however, i am unable to wake it by sending a magic packet to its mac address - is there any utility that other thinkpad users use?
does it work over wireless also?

wol doesnt work with wireless, make sure you also enable it in windows, goto your device manager, double click ur ethernet card, goto advanced, and there should be a wake on lan setting, some ethernet cards do not have this, while others only have directed packets or magic packets, and still others give you the option of using both, magic and directed.

here is a nice Windows WOL tool:
http://www.depicus.com/wake-on-lan/wake-on-lan-gui.aspx

Works fine for my T40p. By the way: there is no need to put your T40p in standby mode. Just shut it down. I think WOL works just for computers powered off anyway.

a magic paket is sent to all computers within an IP Range, i.e. 192.168.0.x
If the network adapter matches the Mac address, the computer wakes up. If not, nothing happens. The magic paket doesn't know what exact IP address the computer has. So it is broadcasted to all computers within a subdomain.

whereas a directed packet just sends to the IP address?

so there is no difference in functionality, just in the way it's achieved?

I found following for further readings here: http://bbcr.uwaterloo.ca/~brecht/server ... IC/wol.htm

Wake Up Address Patterns

The wake up capability of Intel adapters is based on patterns sent by the OS. You can configure the driver to the following settings using Intel PROSet for Windows. For Red Hat Linux, WoL is provided through the Ethtool* utility. For more information on Ethtool, see the following Web site: http://sourceforge.net/projects/gkernel.
OS Controlled - accept all the patterns sent by the OS.
Directed Packets - accepts only patterns containing the adapter's Ethernet address in the Ethernet header or containing the IP address, assigned to the adapter, in the IP header.
Magic Packets - accept only patterns containing 16 consecutive repetitions of the adapter's MAC address.
Directed and Magic - accepts the patterns of both directed packets and magic packets.

Choosing "Directed Packets" will also allow the adapter to accept patterns of the Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) querying the IP address assigned to the adapter. If multiple IP addresses are assigned to an adapter, the operating system may request to wake up on ARP patterns querying any of the assigned addresses. However, the adapter will only awaken in response to ARP packets querying the first IP address in the list, usually the first address assigned to the adapter.

hmmm, that last bit sounds as if the pc will also be woken up out of standby by someone else typing in its IP address in a browser (or thru file sharing), without any special utility needed? i guess i'll have to do some further research... thanks!
