T30 / Looking for 7,200 RPM Drive

#1 Post by jhrain » Tue Feb 15, 2005 10:00 am

I have a 2366-91U.

Is there a hardrive available via IBM that runs at 7,200 RPM? If so, does anyone know the FRU #?

Thank You

I'm trying to eek out the most out of my Thinkpad. I've got it up to 1Gig of RAM, and I guess this is my only other option.

Your T30 takes normal 2.5" 9.5mm drives, so your best (and I believe only) option at 7200 is the Hitachi 7k60. Brilliant drive, worth every penny. Do a search here or in IBM site, should find it easily.

Yes, IBM sells 7200RPM HDs, but you don't want to buy one from IBM!

You can get a fully warranted Hitachi 7K60 HD from either www.zipzoomfly.com (my preferred vendor) or www.newegg.com for approximately half of what IBM asks for the same HD. Both sell the drive presently for ~$146 delivered.

If you truly want your T30 to be all it can be, there's an undocumented upgrade that allows you to install 2GB of max RAM, not 1GB. I've had my 7K60 equipped T30 up to 1.5GB and it runs flawlessly.

Actually Matt, that's the 5400RPM 80GB HD, not the 7K60.

I just determined that the 7K60 is only available as a replacement part from IBM Boulder parts and the price is, better sit down, $422!

Where can I find the undocumented fix that allows 2GB RAM on my T30?

You can't find it because it's undocumented!

Make sure you have the latest BIOS installed and then install the 1GB stick or sticks, the unit will see and report it correctly.

Same thing goes for the A31/p.
