T500 Ethernet Light Blinking Orange?

Whenever I am plugged into the internet via ethernet at my college dorm, an orange light (on the lower left corner of my T500's ethernet port) blinks on and offf. Is this normal or does it mean something? Is there anything I can do to make it stop, it is annoying at nights.

I thought this was normal for any ethernet port on an active network. Never paid much attention because there seems to be something blinking or lit up somewhere on these computers.

I suppose some black electrical tape or a black permanent marker could solve the problem. Is there a specific setting to turn of indicator lights? Never considered the possibility...
