javascript:emotiDirectx8 on Thinkpad t23 2647-2TG won't work

Hi,
I'm new to this forum and probably this question has been asked before in the past. However, I tried to google around for my problem in the net, and did not find a satisfying answer, so far. Maybe somebody in this forum has any glue to my problem.
I've a T23 (2647-2TG) 1 GHz PIII, upgraded to 640 MB RAM / 40 GB Hitachi HD which runs Win2k. The system has a 16 MB S3 supersavage graphics controller that did not cause any problems so far. Very recently I wanted to install an application that requires DirecX 8 or higher. Upgrade of the Win2k DirectX7 to DirectX8.1 via the Microsoft homepage appeared to work ok, but to my great disappointment the application would not run. So I checked the DirectX installation via dxdiag. All tests were ok, except the direct3d tests would not work out. You are expected to see a rotating cube with the DirectX logo on it but the cube is blank white in the first test and two additional tests would fail with an error message "not enough video memory". Although I tried re-installation of the video-driver and removal of DirectX followed by a fresh installation of versions 8, 8.1 or 9.0c the problem persisted. I've also removed the device drivers for sound, video, USB, etc and re-installed them but the problem stayed. I removed possible conflicting applications and tools (quick time, norton antivirus, zone alarm) without any change. Testing each RAM stick alone or changing their position also did not help. I checked the graphic adaptor memory via the ibm pc-doctor and is passed all tests. Going back to DirectX7 via de-install and installation of the original Win2k version was ok and no problems were detected by diagdx.
I installed the latest video-driver (12.90.90 for win2k and XP) and in the version history of this driver I read at some point "added DirectX8 support". Therefore, I assume that the super-savage card in my T23 should be DirectX8 compatible. I'm happy with directX7, still I wonder, whether my machine can also run applications that require directx8. So any help in this issue is really welcomed.
One other little thing that I noticed: Win2k tries to install some "unknown PCI device", although all the devices that should be there are installed and work properly. Any ideas?
Please excuse my bad English
Ernst
