R40 Died:REVISED!!

#1 Post by jronald » Sat Oct 31, 2009 7:46 am

Recently acquired a couple of R40's. History is unknown. I loaded uBuntu on one of them and it ran fine for a couple of hours. Then I was in the process of loading windblows on it. Had the restore disks, the works.
Something strange happened in that Grub restarted, then the screen went blank, and it shut off. Now it does not matter what I do, it will not turn back on. I have pulled memory, pulled the CMOS and main battery, left it over night, swapped the key board. Its just dead......
Any ideas?

Ron

left it over night
does that meen removing the AC adapter from the wall plug .. if not, redo.
Its just dead
what does that mean? no sign of life or?
Try to connect the R40 to the (powered) AC Adapter and leave it for an hour. See if the AC Adapter gets warm/hot.
If so, then you may have a ThinkPad that is shorting the AC Adapter.

I tried with and without the adapter. It does nothing, not a flicker, not a beep, nothing at all.

Have you tried this old trick: remove the battery, hard and media drives, unplug the adapter. Press the "power" button 10 times in a row, holding it down for 10 seconds each time and 30 seconds the last time around.

Plug the adapter (but nothing else) back in and try to power on.

Good luck.

OK here is what I have deduced:
Flaky battery, flaky charge circuit and flaky power adapter.
If I change any one of the 3, everything is fine. Works normal.

Go figure

I might have what you are looking for anyway......
The 3rd R40 I picked up powers up, but does not post. I have not had a chance to monkey with it yet, so the status is unknown. The screen does have some keyboard damage/indentations on it, so its not perfect. Give me a couple of days and Ill let you know.

@jronald Well... we might have something here. I'm waiting for my R40 to come back from repairs with a forum member. If that comes in really soon (next week or two), I reaaally want to buy ajkula66 sxga+ screen that is for sale in the marketplace. Then I will have a spare screen. Keep me posted.

@ajkula66 I don't want to hold up any offers on the screen, so I haven't sent you any pm's.

@vanaya:

No offers on that screen whatsoever, so it'll probably be there when you decide whether you want it...

Other parts there as well...just throw me a low-ball offer for the whole darn thing, I need it out...

OK
Swapped the MoBo out for a "good" one, does the exact same thing! Anybody got any ideas? Single light plus the battery light comes on, fan spins for a moment, then nothing. Light stays on but nothing else. Neither MoBo beeps because of the absence of memory. The LCD does flicker when you turn it off

What happens if you disconnect the LCD from the systemboard, power it up from a dock with an external LCD and keyboard connected.

OK,
Im trying to cobble together an R40 for a Mother in need:

3 Mobos do the same thing: Powers up, fan spins then quits
I have pulled everything that can be disconnected out/off including the LCDs.
Anyone have any ideas?
