No internet after restart.

#1 Post by jgrobertson » Sat Oct 31, 2009 12:09 pm

On T60P with Core 2 Duo, after upgrading from Vista 64 Ultimate to Windows 7 64 Ultimate, I find that after a restart, I will have network connectivity within my place but it will not connect to the Internet which is through a router to a DSL. If I cold start it, evertying is fine.

I have a hunch this is a power management issue. Is this a wireless connection only?

This has wireless but most of the time it is plugged into the ethernet. I re-installed the W7 power, hotkey and wireless drivers after installing W7. I thought that took care of things but apparently not.

Ethernet, Ok assuming your current setting is to get an IP address from a DHCP server, try hard coding an IP address into the Thinkpad as a test. .e.g. assuming your current router IP is 192.168.2.1, then give the TP an address of 192.168.2.10, and set the gateway IP address to 192.168.2.1

Let me clarify. It actually sees the router and DSL modem. The connection type is Private. When cold booting, the connection type is Private + Internet. On a restart or wake up from sleep, it does not restore the Internet part. I don't see a way to control that selection manually in all the Network and Sharing Settings. IPCONFIG now does not give me access to most of the commands that I used to use in XP to fix these kinds of things. (I am the administrator) and I don't know what is required to get access to those commands.

In start, go to all programs, accessories, right click on command prompt, select run as administrator. Type ipconfig /all and post the results here. Do this both while the connection is working and while it is not. Post both results.

It seems like I remember reading something about the initial network setup for 7 - if you select "Public" you are better off because "Private" is to restrictive if you want to reach the outside world.

If you are pulling a an IP on your routers subnet via it's DHCP and can't ping a DNS address like yahoo.com you have something blocking your internet access. I suspect network configs & Win7. It would be helpful like Harry said to get an IPCONFIG /ALL and check your subnet. You should see a DHCP - Default Gateway - DNS servers IP addresses.

I have not used 7 enough yet, but it runs on one of my laptops and connects fine (32bit though)

Good luck I know this can be frustrating.
