T22 and Redish Display

#1 Post by membre999 » Tue Feb 15, 2005 3:07 pm

Hi guys, i bought a used T22. Yesterday it arrived. It was very loud, so I bought a new HDD today and now it's much better than before (but I can still hear it).

Well anyways, I've got a problem:

When the display is turned on, e.g. when starting the notebook, then the display is all red and no other colors are on the screen. but this goes away after a few minutes and the screen is back to normal with colors again.

what is this and how can i fix it ? will it become worse ? i don't hope so. is that maybe the cable thingie problem that i read about here a few times ?

thanx for helping ! :D

Hmm. I have an old iSeries that's been doing that for a while. It's been getting steadily worse. I doubt you can fix w/o replacing the lcd.

It's either the video inverter card or the actual LCD backlight, hopefully the former.

The inverter card is widely available on eBay and, by using the HMM for your machine as a guide, is easily changed.

It's easier, although more expensive, to change the entire display rather than attempt to change just the backlight, although it can be done depending on the level of your repair skills.

Thanx for the answers guys :D
But still darn

The guy who sold me the laptop told me about this and that he got that redish screen since he got the laptop 2 years ago, but i thought it was no big deal, but now it's haunting me

What would you do if you were me, try to fix the failure by oneself (i never opened a notebook before) or return it ?

The red color comes from an old backlight.
The phosporous layer on the tube, that transfers UV light into visible light is worn out, so spectra in red dominate.
After heating up which takes a few minutes, the other spectra join in. So it will become white.
Nothing to worry about, it is just an old backlight.
you can get them cheaply on eBay (10 bucks). But installation is somewhat tricky.

Same problem, when the old display is more yellowish than white. Get a new backlight.

Thank you for the explanation bro

I assume I can break the notebook while trying to fix the backlight, isn't it ?

Is it highly risky ? Is it worth the trouble or shall i just return the notebook ?

It is very tricky.

Most people just replace the LCD.
