IBM ThinkPad 380Z Graphics

#1 Post by ThinkPad560X » Sun Nov 01, 2009 12:13 am

I have a IBM ThinkPad 380Z and after all the years of having it, I still use it and turned it into a desktop working way and just sits above my real desktop tower and works as a networking computer now. I have it hooked up to the same LCD monitor as my main desktop is using with diffrent keyboards and mouse for them each. I'm wanting to upgrade or update my ThinkPad 380Z graphics card to High color 32-bit. It is on High (24 bit), 1024 by 768. Its running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition with a Gateway 19" LCD Monitor. Graphics card: NeoMagic MagicGraph256AV driver.

You can't upgrade the video card in the 380Z. Your best bet is to get a docking station with video card built in. I just got one of these to try in my older machines. Haven't had the chance to set it up though. It has a built in 8MB ATI card.

Thanks for the links, I bought the $4.99 one, that docking station is way better than the one that is made for the 380Z/560X ThinkPads I was going to buy, but not anymore. And now I walt have to buy the PCMCIA USB card aswell.

I was looking for a PCMCIA Graphics card and Intel Processor card if they ever made one a long time ago when I just had my ThinkPad 560X and 380Z.

That's the same one I purchased. It arrived new, in sealed box. Haven't even opened it up yet, but I think it will work great for my own 380Z or 600X machines. The 8MB ATI card that's built in should be good enough for most things you can do on these machines. Here's some more info: http://www.realtimesoft.com/multimon/reviews/easidock/

I'm not sure if the dock gives you USB 1.1 or USB 2.0... hoping for USB 2.0, but doubt it since there's no mention.

I'm REALLY curious to know how this thing works out for you guys. I'd love to have something like this for my 570E.

I'll let you know how well it works. They just shipped it today. I'm hoping its USB 2.0 Since its brand new it should be. Usually anything above the year 2003 its 2.0. because my previose ThinkPad T20 was a 2001 and had 1.0 USB and I think up to the T23. My IBM ThinkPad 380Z is running Windows XP Home Edition, So don't know if it will auto install like most hardware or have to use CD. Windows 2000 and below for sure have to use install CD.

I got my External docking station today. Its marked on the box 2002 and even pluged in a flashdrive to find its USB 1.1.
All the ports work fine along with the 2 USB ports. proccess to install takes 10min atleast on my ThinkPad 380Z. I'm still trying to find out how to change my ThinkPad NeoMagic graphics to the ATi one, It keeps saying can't find an external monitor. So It may be for the External monitor witch for is okay since I make my 380Z into a desktop setup.
