570E Gaming: Is this even possible?!

#1 Post by 8ball » Tue Feb 15, 2005 7:47 pm

Hey all,

Firstly, let me say hello, this is my first post and I am brand new to thinkpads.com. I just got my little 570E off eBay yesterday. It is much different than the 570 without the E. I am runing a P3 clocked at 500MHz. 192mb on my RAM, 12 gig HDD, and Windows 2000 Pro. The laptop runs fine but it only has the 2.5mb of Graphics Video Memory. That is hardly enough to play solitare, let alone games like Halo PC. I was wondering if there is any way to increase my video RAM, perhaps by making some of my internal memory (the 192 megs) as my video RAM? I am not even sure this is possible, but I want to get it to the point where I can play Halo PC. I understand that taking 2.5 mb and making it 32 isn't really realistic, but can it be done? I don't necessarily want Halo to run smoothly, I just want it to run. Or even a gme that requires like 8 megs of video, like Giants or something.....

Thanks for any help you can give!

The 570E has a Pentium III and 2.5mb of video ram. You can play some older games on the machine, but don't expect to be able to play any newer titles unless they are 2 dimensional games.

... right, but is it possible to expand that memory by making my PC RAM part of my video memory? I guess this could be described like partitioning a harddrive. You set certain ammounts of disk space for various things. I want to take my 192 megs of RAM and give, say, 32 of that to my video RAM so the computer would use that partitioned 32 megs of RAM as my video memory instead of my 2.5 megs.

I know I know old topic, but

You can play Quake 1, Quake 2 and Unreal Tournament on the 570e with ease. Mechwarrior 3 also runs great as do games like Alpha Centauri, Sim City 3000, Diablo 2, Civilization Series.

SNES emulation is perfect :D

The 570e isn't useless as far as gaming goes!

I have a 380 which is a yet even older machine and even slower so I'm pretty sure you could run the games I have. I have MS Flight Sim '96, Combat Flight Sim 98, The MS Entertainment Pack for Win 31, Duke Nukem 3D Atomic, Descent, Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, the Microsoft Pinball Arcade and Sierra 3D minigolf. I also used to have Half Life on it before I replaced the hard drive.
