Upgrade X41 w. 64GB SSD vs. save money for new laptop?

I got my 64GB kingspec for 140 euro's and that is not that much more expensive than a traditional 1.8" drive for the X41, while you get an amazing speed boost and a more quiet, cooler, power-efficient laptop. But that's just my opinion. Good luck! //R

Actually, I already found some on a Chinese auction site. However, I would like to pay a visit to the local computer parts plaza and see if there are other options, or better prices.

I fully agree that an X41 is an awesome machine, and it's because of that I will not spend +/- 250 bucks for a SSD when a X41 will cost +/-370 bucks (all market prices here in Switzerland).

My choice in the case above is to buy another X41!

I don't get it You keep comparing the upgrade price with the price for another X41. Another X41 will not be more than slightly faster if faster at all. I don't see the benefit in getting another X41 with a slow HDD.

The thing is that I consider that there are alternatives to SSDs, (as you will see through several topics of this forum). So paying more than 1/2 the price of a X41 makes me think that is not on proportion...

There are benchmarks on this forum that proves that some alternatives are pricely very competitive and overall no much slower than an SSD. In my particular case, I would copy several files to my X41 from either my NAS or from my desktops, so the issue with SSDs being slow on write operationes somehow bothers me.

32GB Kingspecs SSDs are cheaper, but I would then loose 50% of storage capacity.

I'm not saying I don't like SSDs, I see they are getting more & more mainstream and I'm also sure they will replace spinning HDs in near future. But I will wait a bit that prices settle down. As I stated in previous posts, I'd prefer to save that money for a X6*/X200.

I see it in another way. The X4x-series is old, if I'm to get a new component for it now, depending on the cost, I expect for a certain timeframe that the whole machine can keep on working.

If another part fails, then I will have to shell out more $$$ to keep it working.

Furthermore, if the new component I'm buying for it is unlikely to be useful, or of much value, in case the machine breaks down and I forbid fixing it because of cost or component availability...

Considering all of these, that put an upper limit on how much I'm willing to pay, for a particular upgrade.

Besides Windows 7, and very likely a faster WLAN adapter, I still haven't decided on whether to get a SSD or a HDD for an aging X41T, which I expect to get 3-4 more years of service life out of it.

I was passing by a friend after coming home today just to ask some questions... and luckily he had bought a KingSpec 32 GB SSD to test in a X41 some months ago. He has sold the X41 again and therefore I could just borrow the disk, which is in my machine right now while I'm installing Windows 7 Business/Professional to test it.

I must search the forum later on to figure out if the error 2010 could just pass by itself without me being required to press ESC.

EDIT: Just found out to change it to continue in the bios.
Now I just need to figure out how to TRIM in Windows 7 (can't find the feature) and optimize it for the SSD and X41 in general

I just reinstalled my IBM 4200RPM HDD again because I needed some programs and files on the disk.

One of the programs, that I feel is extremely slow at starting up (Maple) took 40 seconds on the normal HDD and just 13 seconds on the SSD.

I have been offered the disk for a price in danish kroner corresponding to 120$. If I should buy it from ebay, I would have to order outside EU for a price of 125 dollars excluding taxes and import toll.
This seems like a decent offer for both me and the seller (my friend) given that I have had the chance to test the disk first and not having to risk returning a defect disk.


Is it really that bad an idea? The fact that it is not vulnerable to shock also seem appealing to me.
Since I will get a laptop for my project (probably powerful T400 or the like) and I will probably get another laptop after graduating and getting a job, I don't see what I should save for.
