If you are thinking of buying Windows 7, read this to see which discount(s) apply to you:

Students should also remember that if their school offers software through MSDNAA you might even be able to get it for free.

And, if I understand it correctly, if you have relatively modern hardware and no immediately pressing need for 64 bits, you might be able to get license keys for two legal OS installs -- one for 32 bit W7, and one for 64 bit.

Or more. I can actually get 4 separate editions of Windows 7 through my school for free with unique keys. I have Windows 7 Professional x64 installed on both my desktop and laptop (I had to call in for the activation on my laptop). This means I have some extra for other computers I have in the house (like my file server).

What if you have a relative who is a student. Can they get a copy for you. Not 100% legal i guess, but not outright piracy.

I would think that it would be considered piracy since most license agreements for academic software is written such that it is only to be used by a "qualified" educational user.
