Hello everyone,
last autumn, the second memory slot on my T30 2366-R7G ceased to work properly. Guy in the local IBM service centre put the well-known tape on the inside of the memory cover to apply some force to the second memory. This "fixed" it for a while, but after a month or two, the problem is back. From time to time, the notebook either boots up only with 256 MB of memory, or doesn't boot up at all. When I called back to the service centre, the guy insisted that they now had a permanent solution. He refused to tell me what they plan to do. On a direct question whether they will change the motherboard, he said something like "that maybe too". When I responded that as far as I know, a new motherboard wouldn't solve the problem, just postpone it (until my warranty expires...), he told me that there were newer models with different memory slots. But if I'm not wrong, my book is from the last T30 generation... The slot is not (yet) fried as the second memory sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.
Does anyone know whether there really are some newer T30 motherboards that don't suffer from the well-known memory slot problem or the guy is just bluffing hoping my notebook wouldn't return before the warranty expires? I've read some posts about this issue but don't know what to think...
Thank you in advance for reply and sorry for my English. Greetings from Slovakia.
P.S. This forum is great. Wish I found it earlier...
T30 memory slot issue -- is there really a definitive soluti
I got a number of those a while back for a client, and was told at the time by my vendor (who is very reputable) that I had the newer generation. Not so, it turns out. I have had several fail with bad memory slots. Since the latter part of 2004, there has been an engineering fix that is supposed to fix the problem permanently. I have had a couple of these repairs, and the memory slot problem has not recurred on those machines. I asked if I could get the engineering change on a "good" machine and was told no.

JD,
There's an Engineering Change Order for the T30s that allows you to get the upgraded MB swap even if there's no present problem with the T30 in question.
Just tell them that you're having "intermittent" problems with the memory and they'll perform the upgrade.
Regards,
James
