I don't beleive it!

#1 Post by lukkbox » Sun Nov 08, 2009 4:44 am

Just got my T21 back into ship shape and Bristol fashion and now my T42 has a problem! LOL!

About a month ago i started the T42, only for the screen to apparently die on me within a couple of minutes

I checked the screen with a flashlight and it seems it was projecting the display onto the monitor but the backlight was not working so i could not see it without a flashlight

Turned it off, and back on, problem fixed ... till now

This morning i went to boot it up, i was greeted by the option to press F1 or F12 screen, and then it dissapeared

I have rebooted a further ten times now, and the same thing occurs

Little bit of research tells me this might be an inverter problem but my questions to you are these

IF the inverter was broken, surely it wouldn't work at all? Not be intermittent?

Is it more likely my inverter has come loose?

Why would it work immediately upon booting and then die within 20 seconds each time?

Could there be something in the boot sequence that is making it behave this way?

Any and all help appreciated guys n gals i just got myself back to 2 x working thinkpads in the house (hallelujah!) and now i'm back down to 1, and it's not the newer one lol

So glad i revived my T21!

also, on the monitor of the T42 on the bottom left part of the screen when it was working there appeared to be a bit of red bleed on the screen, does that make sense? just a little reddish hue to the edge, is that related to the issue at all or a seperate one? will repairing the inverter cure this or not?

Thanks for taking the time to pop in, i will be watching this thread like a hawk!

Hilp mi plis!

*update*

when i press the lid close button the monitor comes back to life for about 10 seconds and then dies again, hope that helps diagnose!

A red tint to the LCD image (usually immediately after power on) indicates a CCFL that is on the way out. It sounds like yours finally quit.

Hi Harry!

What's the best fix for this and what is the cheapest fix that you know of

i Briefly looked into replacing a CCFL when fixing my T21 but it seemed a daunting task so i just replaced the screen itself with a spares/repair from ebay for not much more than a bulb would of cost me anyways

Is that my best option here or do you know if replacing the CCFL on a T42 is easier?

thanks for your help here, glad i didnt order a replacement inverter this morning and came to ask you guys instead!

Dan

It's the same job as in a T21. Your best alternative is the same...LCD panel replacement.

You could send it in to Moniserv/LCDParts for a repair. $75.- + return shipping.

If the LCD is otherwise in good condition, this might just be a cheaper option.

Oops! Didn't see your location in time. Perhaps a similar service exists in the UK?

hi nick

thanks for the email and thanks for the offer but i think i am going to probably leave it as is and get a 19" lcd external monitor instead and leave this thing put, the battery was not much good for more than 1.5 hrs anyways so not much use travelling about with it

jeebus h rice why couldn't they make the backlight easily changeable i mean its ridiculous to see a lappy go out of portable service because of a stinkin bulb!

access panel on rear of laptop lid? couple of screws?

WONKERS!
