R40 - ultrabay

#1 Post by FishRman » Sun Nov 08, 2009 2:31 pm

Hello,

I have an R40 notebook 2722-5MG. The strange thing is that, in the ultrabay only FDD works..I have checked 5 different CDrom / DVDroms/ DVDrw drives... none of them works... They got the power, they open .. but are invisible in bios and in Windows..
I came to an idea that my ultrabay is broken. I have seen many auctions where entire motherboards for r40 are sold...
My question: Is the ultrabay an integral part of the motherboard? can it be replaced?

Best regards,
FISHRMAN

See page 117 in the maintenance manual. The actual connector for the Ultrabay devices is integrated into the systemboard.

Thank you for such a fast reply...

But on the 122 page of this manual there is "how to remove the ultrabay"... so there is some chance, that the problem is on the bay itself.... ??

??
or is it just a cover for the drive??

Obviously your page 122 is not my page 122. On my page 122, the title is "2040 LCD panel and LCD cable assembly"

That's just a guide rail. It's merely a metal plate with no electronics or connectors on it. As I said, the connections and electronics are on the systemboard.

hmm :(
Nevertheless, thank you very much for help...

Maybe you know how to update the bios without having a good battery? The app doesnt allow me to do the update saying the battery is not charged.. which is true, since the batt is dead ;)

That is a challenge to say the least. There is an update method that gets thrown around from time to time when discussing older Thinkpads. Maybe it will work for you, or at least give you some ideas to head in the right direction;
