eSata and PCMCIA

#1 Post by CeeDee » Tue Nov 10, 2009 10:49 pm

Can anyone tell me if an eSata adapter in a PCMCIA slot will attain the same speeds as one in an express slot?

Don't know the answer, but it appears to be dependent on the specific Thinkpad model. Here are some interesting things to read. Came across these when I was looking into esata cards for my external drives. Ended up sticking to USB for now.

It could, but the ExpressCard will most likely be faster. Is there any particular reason you need to use a PC Card over an ExpressCard?

I saw an ad on eBay for a 2 port card that is a flush fit, much like the USB PCMCIA card and I have not seen an express card with the same dimensions.

After reading the above, I think I will forget it. If they didn't get it right on the T61 I can't imagine that it would be any better on the earlier T60. Especialy as it's one of the combined PCMCIA/Express types on my T60.

Its actually much more dependent on what is implemented in each particular brand/model of PCMCIA or ExpressCard SATA card.

There is a BIG variation in performance between SATA cards on the same ThinkPad system in my experience, and the variations move with the cards, not the ThinkPad models hosting them.

Cheers,

Does anyone have a recomendation for an esata express card that does work well on a T60?
I don't think I'll go the PCMCIA route.
