I just bought the T42...and am now planning to expand the set-up with a separate monitor and wireless keyboard/mouse.

Please, any recommendations on a 19" flat panel monitor and wireless keyboard/mouse options (bluetooth).

Dell 2001fp is a beaut at 21". It can be had for around $500 if you wait around for deals.

Many Samsung LCDs have a full 3yr wrnty just like your new TP.

I love my Dell 1905fp, sharp, clear 4 additional USB 2.0 ports make plugging in card readers and whatnot a snap. You just missed a sale on the Small Business of 40% off. That made it $377 + $13 shipping, a real bargain for this monitor. Oh yeah, three year warranty!! Forgot to mention height adjustment, tilt adj. pivot to portrait mode, really nice.

Keep it true blue. I have a Dell flat panel and it is garbage. IBM has some pretty advanced patents and techniques for flat panel design and the prices aren't bad but you'd never know it. I plan on getting one of these, they can be had for around $430 with the academic pricing. It looks like they are out of stock now but well worth the wait.

"IBM recently released its newest LCD monitor, the ThinkVision L190. It is a 19" LCD with 12ms pixel response time, a wide range of tilt and an ultra-narrow bezel.

The bezel is 15mm wide, minimizing the distance between screen images to improve multiple monitor configurations. The 12ms response time ensures that the monitor does not suffer from ghosting. The monitor's brightness is 250 cd/m and it has a contrast ration of 500:1. Native resolution is 1280x1024 with automatic scaling of non-native resolutions. We have five of the Dell 20" 1600 x 1200 display LCDs and I think they are wonderful. We don't need them to be color adjusted for content creation so I can't comment about that. Google for the LCD and I think you can get it for about $600.

Also, www.extremetech.com just reviewed a new Dell 24" 1920x1200 which they liked very much at around $1200 but probably $900 after a Dell sale.

Alternatively, the Dell 2005FPW is an absolutely killer wide-screen LCD. It is comprised of the same 20" S-IPS panel as the Apple 20" Cinema Display. As a result of being S-IPS, it does have great 8-bit color reproduction. The 12ms response time is another major bonus. I have played HL2, Doom III, and MS Flight Sim 2k4 on it with no issues whatsoever. I watched a couple of DVDs on it tonite and it is beautiful. I am really loving the wide-screen format. I never thought I would, but now that I got one I understand how they are nice to use. For instance, I can easily watch the movie on one half of my display, as I am doing now, and write this message on the other half. I find it has greatly reduced the amount of ALT-TABbing I am doing.

As a note, characterizing Dell LCDs generically is at best a slightly misguided thing to do. They are sourced to be made by Samsung, LG, BenQ, and Liteon. Here is a partial list:

One last note about the 2005FPW. They had some issues with the first batch of them. These issues have been resolved and comments about things like backlight bleeding should be largely ignored. I use a 1905FP and a 2001FP at work. So, I do know tha tthey perform quite well and do like them. But, I do feel the 2005FPW is a better choice. A large part of my decision to go wide screen also had to do with the FCC pushing HDTV pretty hard and all games that came out in the last year are natively 16:10 aspect ratio and just clip to do "standard" 4:3.

My question is about potential resolution conflicts.

I just bought a 2373-JXU (from Bill) and am anxiously awaiting its arrival. It's a 15" FlexView SXGA +IPS with 64MB ATI Radeon 9600 with mini-dock and a max display resolution of 1400 x 1050. The IBM site also lists its maximum resolution at 2048x1536 - I'm guessing that this is through the DVI output.

The Dell site states (in bold red letters. mind you) To optimize this monitor's performance, your system must be able to support WSXGA+ resolution (1680x1050)." I also saw some comments in one their forums about potential problems interfacing ATI cards to this monitior.

Did you have any problems in scaling your system's resolution to match that of the 2005fpw???

do the regular video drivers work?

does it work well as a dual monitor?

That's an awesome screen, Lance. I wish I got in on the $385 shipped deal a few weeks back. Oh well, there's always next time!

To answer the compatibility questions above: The T4x and ATI chipset have no problem supporting the widescreen or the high resolution as dual monitors, but I believe the standard drivers have "crippled" DVI out to only support 1280x1024. In order to run an external monitor at native res, I think you have to install one of several hacked drivers floating around the internet.

I don't have a 19" panel, but FWIW I do have a Dell Ultrasharp 1703FP on my desktop box. I'm satisfied with it.

Dell panels are generally great value for the money.

I'll say this: the nice, bright FlexView display on my T42 puts my Dell 2001FP to shame...makes it positively dim!

Does anyone make 24" lcd monitors with a 4:3 aspect ratio? Or is everything greater than 20" made in widescreen format?

Debating whether to get a 24" widescreen or 20" standard, but if they had a 24" standard, that would be perfect.

Just bought this Viewsonic VP2130b monitor two weeks ago and couldn't be happier. 21.3" standard screen, 1000:1 contrast ratio, and 8ms response time. No dead pixels, outstanding picture quality.

Funny, I bought the 17" varient of this same monitor model almost three years ago for around $500. LCD's have certaintly gotten cheaper.
