BSOD after removing root kits with Malewarebytes

#1 Post by madmaven » Tue Nov 10, 2009 11:52 pm

i'm running Xp pro on a T23 and installed malwarebytes and it found 5 rootkits so I told it to remove let it set a while while I was on the G40 turned around and it was rebooting I get the BSOD with no special error ( nothing like like inpage_kernel) just about 10 seconds of the stopmessage and then it reboots and no matter what you chose on the black page
safe Mode, last known good config start normally, they all loop to the Blue Screen. :banghead: :banghead:    I heard you can go into dos and do a system restore any other ideas or does anyone know how to do that restore without windows. Thanks for any suggestions

You can't do a restore without a Windows disc. To stop the rebooting and to have Windows actually stop on the BSOD, uncheck the Automatically Reboot option under Recovery on the Startup/Shutdown tab in the System properties. Short of a restore, nothing can be done without knowing the actual BSOD screen message.

Thank you for your advice,
The BSOD message was generic "the computer has shut down to prevent damage if this is the first time you have seen this screen try to reboot, ifyou have recently installed new hardware or software you can try to remove it..... try to insert windows disk and go to the repair and do the chkdsk /r
which I have just completed and the computer continues to boot to the blue screen? Any advice on the next step?? :??:

More info
I did try to change the restart behavior in the bios but in the startup there is not option to stop the reboot. The bios is really old 11-16-2001 that might be why? the blue screen lasts about 30 seconds so I was ble to read a little each time the stop code at the bottom is 0x0000007B 0x7b (0xF7b30528 0xC0000034 0x0000000

Right click on My Computer
Click Properties
Click the Advanced tab
Under Startup and Recovery, click settings
Under System failure, uncheck Automatically restart

If you can't restore the drive, you should still be able to get documents, email and such from the drive. Probably the easiest way would be to launch the Rescue and Recovery CD and from within Rescue and Recovery you could browse the hard drive and copy files and folders to a USB drive.

I went to the web pages and read about the 7b error and had just about eshausted all the options there. I then tried to repair and did fixboot and fixmbr which didn't work. I can't do anything in windows because it will not boot at all. I took the drive out and connected it to a desktop with a USB to ide device and was able to get documents, pics, etc off of it. now I am trying to repair windows by using the next step on the cd which askes if you want to repair your windows, I havn't done this in ages and remember the last time was confusing. I hate this because it is like putting clean clothes over a dirty body. I am doing this for a friend augh wouldnt you know. so i dont know if she can handle reinstalling her printer, and all the other stuff she has on it. she is pretty old about 80 and i dont want to stimie her too much. oh well... :SH!:

You could try reinstall of xp over the current version, I forget what that is called, in place upgrade seems to ring a bell. Not sure what license key you would need for activation. Before doing this, I would save a image clone of the drive. But this would re create the os side while leaving all your apps and doc's in place.

Thats what I thought i would do when I did the repair but it was the same desktop. so It was different than rewritng windows over the top. have never dont that about saving an image clone of the drive canyou do that outside of the GUI since it wont boot or do you put it on another computer. I have already wiped this one and reinstalled windows and am in the process of reinstalling all the apps and wouldn't you know but bad news comes in 2's (or3'0 my daughter called me and has a very similar problem she has been able to repair her desktop and is getting some error messages and is afraid to turn it off. she is in the process of trying to save docs, pics so if there is a not too advanced way to savean image clone of the drive I'd be for trying taht for her.

Viruses and then the cures (Malwarebytes and Combofix) ultimately do so much damage that a full clear partitions, format and re-install Windows is the only realistic cure. In another forum, I have seen many people relunctantly accept that advice because there was no real alternative. ... JDH

I know you are right!! I have spent MANY hours in the past trying to repair compromised machines and in the end you still have a compromised machine. I just advised my daughter to think about just wiping the dang thing and starting over. She has had the machine over 2 years and it is about time anyway. Either way it is a lot of time but in the end you have a nice fresh clean OS with new stuff and probably realize you dont need most of the junk that has cluttered it up rom the past. tHE T23 is not reading my jump drives it installs them but will not deliver the content. so I had to put my software on a disk and thank God it sees and reads the cds. so it is in the thros of updates now. That cussed genuine advantage is surely no advantage to me/

Also I have switched to Panda Cloud free antivirus and it is so easy to install and run. the interface is beyond simple. does anyone else use it and does it update in the background?
I have had it on my vista beast for about 2 weeks and I see nothing so wonder. :?: Guess after I fix up the T23 I willhave to visit those forums. but AVG 9 free makes you download every installation now and it is a long download on a 512mb internet which is all i get here :(
Well thanks for all the input
now micro hard a-- wants me to install an active x controll because it cant determine if this compy is genuine so here we go with microhard a spying on me :BAAAD!:
