What is the maximum memory RAM I can access with X41t Tablet

#1 Post by 257roberts » Thu Nov 12, 2009 4:46 pm

Hi there, New to the forum. I have a X41 Tablet and have added a 1GB stick to the machine. It reports 1.5GB now in Windows. I am in the process of switching the OS to Win7 and wondering if I could add a 2GB stick and have the tablet access the 2GB. I searched the forums and did not find anything conclusive. If you know what the max would be please post back. Thanks! This is a great forum and has helped me quite a bit.

The most that Windows will see and will use is 2GB.

Some systems shipped with either 256 or 512 on-board. Adding a 2GB stick to them will bring it to 2.25 or 2.5GB respectively, but the maximum useable will still be 2GB due to chipset limitations.

Either way adding a 2GB stick to your system will give you more memory and better system responsiveness.

Okay, great, thanks for the info. I may upgrade the memory before I load Win7. I am monitoring the forum here to see what success folks have had with the switch to a new OS.

If you are buying so called Value RAM, make sure you run MEMTEST86 several passes before doing anything significant.

Agreed.

ValueRAM is not very good IME.

Go with Patriot or Crucial. The pricing between them is not significant that its worth rolling the dice on.

You get what you pay for.

This is the RAM that I purchased for my X41t: Kingston 2GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Laptop Memory Model KVR667D2SO/2GR Is this "Value RAM"?

I figured I would give Win7 as much memory as I could before doing the install. Thanks for your replies.

Just FYI, I have used several Kingston ValueRAM modules with satisfying result. And I'm not alone...

Are there others having problems with them? Quite possibly. But I wouldn't lose any sleep putting one of them in my boxes.

It's my perception that, RAM modules are much more stable these days. But I don't tinker with PCs as much as I did 10 or 20-year ago. Anyway, just take this as an anecdote.

Just memtest it if you're worried.

Cheers.

Sure, I'll run the memtest. I have seen high-dollar components DOA, much less regular quality ones.

Technology had gotten better but quality gotten worse. Everybody lost money and even Samsung stopped investing in fabs this year. Good testing then gone the way of cost cutting. Given wafer fabs cost $B+ to build but 16 chip modules are selling for <$20. Qimonda (formerly Infineon, formerly Siemens) had already gone belly up. Everybody are trying to prop up prices by cutting production but 32bit Win7 machines will not need more than 2GB for the next few years. PC shipment volume are not increasing given the down turn.

Then we should not count on manufacturers to do the right thing in testing, the one thing they can save cost easily.
