Stupid OSD problem

#1 Post by Tõnis » Sat Nov 14, 2009 12:03 pm

I reloaded my operating system, and everything was working quite wonderfully, until I decided to change the color in the properties of my OSD. Now, I am stuck with the stupid problem discussed in this topic:

http://www.thinkpads.com/forum/viewtopi ... 29&t=72502

I had the dot, so I went into the properties again and saw this:

http://i961.photobucket.com/albums/ae96 ... erties.jpg

Though the field was blank, I could still select "small" from the drop down menu. When I did that, I was left with this:

... and each time I go back into properties to look, the field is again blank. Also, I should mention, that the this problem does not exist on the other user accounts. For example, when I switch to the guest account, there the OSD is normal.

I'm happy with the color but not with the size. Could someone please look at my registry settings in the pic above and tell me exactly what to change so that only the size goes back to normal? Or, is there another way (other than going in the registry) or (again) resetting the whole machine back to factory? I don't understand why this happened now, because less than a year ago I did the same things (i.e. factory reset, changed OSD colors) without any problems. I've never done any Windows updates (there are some I believe Lenovo did when they downgraded me to XP at time of purchase), and I've never done a Lenovo system update, updated any drivers, or upgraded the BIOS. Otherwise the machine works perfectly. TIA for your time.

In W7 the default size is the same as what is mentioned in the linked thread - "Size"=hex:14,1e,28,14

Thanks, Harryc. Two more, please:

1. How do I go about modifying those settings in the registry editor?

... and

2. If I muck something up, will I still be able to restore my system to factory from the Lenovo partition?

1.) Start, run
Enter 'regedit'
Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\IBM\TPHOTKEY\OnScreenDisplay
Double click on the 'size' parameter
Change the size to 14,1e,28,14
Click OK
2.) Once in regedit and before you make changes, export the registry to a file on an external device (like a USB key) so that you can restore it. Also recommended to create a restore point in XP before making registry changes.

Thank you again, Harryc. When I double click the size parameter, a small "Edit Binary Value" window opens. How do I work within that window? I moved the cursor to after the existing value, hit "Delete," and entered the new value for each one. The thing is, I saw that to the right of the four values was written %8K%, and when I changed the values like I did, that %8K% turned into what I have circled here:

(The arrow is where my cursor first showed up when the window opened.)

I just clicked "Cancel" until I find out whether I'm doing it right.

Ignore what is to the right. Just make sure the value is set. In other words, after clicking OK go back into 'size' and make sure the change was applied.

It worked perfectly, and it looks great. Thank you, Harryc, for walking me through it.
