X41 Tablet XP reinstall

#1 Post by bazthespazz » Sat Nov 14, 2009 2:47 pm

I've got an X41 Tablet that I've had for years and I'd like to reinstall XP. I really don't want to use the image in the recovery partition because I've heard that a clean install will run much faster. I've already made myself a set of recovery CD's using the existing image. If I wipe out the recovery partition and install XP fresh, can I rebuild that recovery partition at a later date using the backup CD's I've created?

The recovery CD's put the partition in place. From there the system is build. I don't see a way to get the partition back. Others may know of a way though.

Yes, the R&R disk set will put back the hidden partition. But why don't you just leave the hidden partition and install in the Active partition.

I guess I could do that. I'll have to give it a try. If it doesn't work I can always restore it using the R&R partition.

Well I tried it and it installed OK but the product key on the bottom didn't work with my copy of XP Tablet PC 2005, so maybe it originally had the 2002 version installed. I didn't touch the hidden partition but after I hit the snag I tried using the "Access IBM" button and that didn't work either so I tried reinstalling with the R&R CD's I made right after I got the machine and it turns out disc 5 is corrupt. Anybody out there got a copy of disc 5 for and X41 Tablet 1866-6SU or a full set of XP Tablet PC 2002 that with work with my product key?

Oh man that sucks.

As for the discs you need I'd check the marketplace end e-bay.

Well I found a copy of XP Tablet that worked with my legit key on the bottom of of my machine. It went in smooth and seems to run faster with most functions working but now the volume control buttons don't work. Device manager says all devices are working properly. Anybody know what driver or piece of software makes these work?

OK, That fixed that problem. How about this one? It used to be when you swiveled the screen it would automatically rotate the picture on the screen. Now I have to get in to the graphics properties and rotate it manually. Is there a fix for that?

Thanks in advance. :-)

This Lenovo link will take you to the downloads area for your machine.

I bet you can find what you need there. ;)

Been there, done that. I've downloaded and installed all the drivers that refer to the graphics and buttons and still no luck.

Well shoot.

I wish I could advise you further but I've never run XP Tablet Edition on my X41T. When I got it came with Windows 7 and I reloaded Windows 7 with a dual boot of Ubuntu 9.10. OOTB Windows 7 supported screen rotation.

To be honest sometimes I don't want the screen to rotate unless I press the rotate button because I might want it in landscape mode and only really use portrait mode for reading e-books and PDF's.

Does the hotkey utility have a setting for the screen rotate button that you can use or do you want it to auto rotate for you?

It looks like Tablet version has a special video driver. Are you sure you used the correct driver for tablet version?

Well I finally got it. I went back to IBM's site and re-downloaded any driver that had to do with the Tablet Buttons and the Graphics Drivers. I reinstalled them and still no luck. I went to the directory where the install program had extracted the Tablet Button software and installed it directly from there using it's setup program and BAM! That did it. It's working like it should now. I guess there was a glitch in the initial install. Thanks for all the help. :D

My boyfriend and I are in mid-drive-update and the disks we have for restoring the system on our X41 are also bad - since you got yours to work would you consider allowing us to borrow them? We bought our X41 tablet used and he had tried to get disks but they are no longer sold or supplied.

Thanks for any help.
