Unexpected shutoff: Hardware fault?

#1 Post by rokahn » Sun Nov 15, 2009 5:11 pm

My T400s suddenly powered off while I was browsing yesterday with no warning. Upon pressing power button, it stalled at the opening thinkpad screen. I hard powered off and then powered up again to same effect. Removed battery, held power button, reinserted battery, and powered up and it worked.

This computer has been giving me plenty of problems (e.g. weekly unexpected shutdowns) but this is the first time I witnessed it in action.

Any ideas what could cause it (e.g. is this definitely a hardware fault)? I'd send it in to be serviced but the ThinkPad service monkeys will probably put it in an aging bin for a week then send it back unchanged because it's not repeatable.

Could it have been an overheat issue? Sometimes a process in the background will chew up 50% or 100% of your CPU without showing anything on screen. Run TPFanControl or HWMonitor to check your temperatures. Taking the battery out and putting it back in might have let it cool down enough so it could start again.

Seems unlikely...I didn't notice the system become unresponsive (which usually happens when a process is chewing resources). Laptop was on a flat surface (so cooling vents weren't obstructed) in a cool room.

Seeing the same problem here. Win 7 RTM x64 Ultimate. Anyone else seeing this problem? Did calling support help?

This is a known issue unfortunately...there is a 18 page thread on this on the lenovo site.

Unfortunately no resolution yet....I'd keep an eye on that thread.
