Thinkpad R40 died and can't find Serial Number??

#1 Post by pt1209 » Tue Nov 17, 2009 8:18 pm

I came home and have an odor that something in my R40 Thinkpad got fried (burning plastic), as I posted just a few days ago the DC Jack needed to be replaced but unfortunately either it or something related to it got cooked. The battery was almost dead this morning so I plugged it in when I went off to work only to find it dead and smelly lol. I was going to start a search for a new/used motherboard but not really sure what exact one I have, I see on Lenovo's site you can plug in your serial number and it will bring up all components of my R40 BUT the one listed on the bottom of my Laptop says "S/N FX 67814" but when I plug FX67814 it says there are not enough digits?? I'm getting these numbers right off the tag which has the bar code on it so I am completely stumped here. It's a Model#2681CU1 with a Mobile Intel Pentium 4 processor"M
1.80 GHz". There are quite a few motherboards for the R40 14" series and I would like to get a exact replacement or as close as possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

All R40 boards are interchangeable, regardless of screen size.

You can even upgrade to a Pentium M CPU if you choose the proper board.

Look here under # 17:

Your board was the lowest-spec'd one, so any other P4M-capable board would be an upgrade...once again, the LCD size has nothing to do with the board you'll pick, they're all the same size.
