Upgrading R51 cpu, what is needed to do so.

#1 Post by njdjh2o » Mon Nov 23, 2009 1:40 pm

I did a search on how to upgrade the CPU and I found a couple of post, but didn't exactly give me what I was looking for.

It stated the max I can go is 2Ghz at 400 bus speed (Dothan), 745, 755, or 765. I founded a couple 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, all the way up to 2.8 at 400 bus speed. Of course I would love to get the 2.8, but would that work in my R51.

Model # 1836-H9U running XP with 1 GB memory (just order another 1Gb memory) with 5400 40gb HD.

Thanks in advance.

Probably not. Bios probably doesn't support it, the pins may be different, and more importantly the heat generated would be excruciating (especially in the confines of a laptop)!!!

The sweet spot would be a Dothan 1.7 (M 735) or 1.8 (M 745).
The M 755 and M 765 cost quite a bit more and run quite hot.
You need a Pentium M 7x5 (where M means Mobile and x = 1/2/3/4/5/6).
The higher values you found are NOT for a laptop!

They all said M on them including the Cent. Someone put a 2.1 in theres and the said the temp on climbed like 2 degrees.

Why did they stop of 1.7 when there are faster processors.

It's really not that simple...and heat IS an issue.

I've had PM765 in a modded R50p and took it out after two weeks, replacing it with PM745. Fan in R5x machines (apart from ATi-based R52) is really not up to the job with a CPU faster than 2.0 IMHO. Yeah, it climbs 2 degrees when you have one IE window open and no AV running in the background...go on youtube for half an hour and watch the machine burn...

Centrino is a platform, not a processor, BTW.
