X-Series Refresh: Best of Both Worlds come March/April
X-Series Refresh: Best of Both Worlds come March/April
I called up IBM to ask 'em about the 2672/73 dealie, and also asked the rep about the last order date for the X31. Well it turns out that the X3x won't be discontinued: we're gonna be getting both X32s and X41s in late March.

From what I gathered from the rep on the phone, the X32's built on the X31 platform, so it will have the same form-factor with Firewire and dedicated graphics, but with the newer processor + chipset.
I didn't ask about the X41, but a Google search came up with a Chinese source hinting at a tablet:
Personally, I think a tablet would be too much of change for the X41, and it'll be what an T43 is to a T42. And lastly, we should remember that the Sonoma chipset values performance over battery life.

Keep in mind I know nothing about the credibility of the source, and if anything, they could've pulled the info from here since it was published this past Friday.IBM: X32 at the end of March is published, X41 will be TabletcPc?
When we facing most newly based on Sonoma overhead construction design IBM Thinkpad T43 time, we start to expect IBM can as soon as possible promote based on this motion new overhead construction design X series Thinkpad product, after all this series relies on the dexterous design style lets the too many IBM bean or sweet potato starch noodles not admire already, is opposite comprehensively says to T series, X series is dexterous is biggest sells the spot.
But up to now IBM all has not disclosed any related new generation of X series product news, but in the short-term on-line some events actually will blow out some related X series recent news, these news might all be unprecedented oh!
At first gave rise to controversy is on-line appears one so-called X31 strengthens the version the view, will be able directly to introduce the Sonoma overhead construction according to this view IBM in in the original X31 type foundation, although to the now looks this view the confidence level was not certainly high, because acted according to IBM looks in the Thinkpad naming custom, once the replacement migration overhead construction platform, IBM surely could promote the series model, but this view actually aroused everybody widespread interest, had many has a fever the person is directly links up with the IBM interior public figure, the result some astonishing news blew out.......
Discloses according to the IBM interior public figure news looks: The X3x series will be able not to suspend production because of the X4x series appearance, IBM will be unprecedented will handle jointly with when promotes X32 and the X41 two section products, these two series product all officially will promote after March, but IBM possibly ahead of time promoted X32, again promoted the X41 product in April, was opposite says to original X31, X32 was not certainly big in the whole design modification, makes us be startled entirely different but actually the X41 design actually with the expectation.
X41 very possibly carries over IBM in X series design one new mentality, because this section product possibly will be one section Tablet the PC type product, this section product in the volume and the weight will be able with X31 quite, definitely to have to surpass present X40 the weight, the X41 product can use the Sonoma overhead construction design, equally all also will be able to select 1.8 inches hard disks designs with X40.
Personally, I think a tablet would be too much of change for the X41, and it'll be what an T43 is to a T42. And lastly, we should remember that the Sonoma chipset values performance over battery life.

Summary of the chinese text (dont pick on me for the translation, i did my best):
After seen the T43 redesigned with sonoma, we wish IBM could announce their new X series quicker. the T series is more performance oriented, and the X series is small and light. The X series has been loved by many and its form factor is its biggest selling point.
Unfortunately, IBM still hasn't published anything regarding their new X series. But there has been some leaked info circulating the internet.
One piece of the controversial information recently is, that IBM will make a "stronger" X31, incorporating Sonoma straight into the new "X31s". Due to past experiences with IBM's naming scheme, this info does not seem to be very credible. In the past, when IBM upgrade a platform, they also raise the series number (since we already know from other posts that it'll be X32s instead of new X31s, it's possible that X32 will have sonoma).
According to IBM internal info, IBM will not stop producing X3x series because of X4x series. IBM will unprecedantly manufacture both X32 and X41. Seems like X32 will come out first in late March, then X41 in April. compared to X31, X32 does not seem to have changed much cosmetically, but X41 is a different story.
X41 will likely bring out the new X series concept. X41 might be a tablet pc with similar weight with the current X31. It will definitely be heavier than the current X40. The X41 will incorporate the new Sonoma platform and continue to use 1.8 inch drives.

One thing to remember when reading the various "leaks" you'll find on the WWW is the fact that those who truly know what's coming are proscribed by non-disclosure agreements from releasing any information before the public announcement.

X32 will have the same form factor for previous X3x systems, but the internals are probably going to be a different beast from the X31. Just look at the X30 -> X31... they're VERY different systems internally. (Tual vs. Banias, Intel video vs. ATI, etc) It's not as big a change as T22 -> T23... The T23 is honestly more of a T30 than it is a T22.
Anyhow, the only thing the series numbers really tell you is form factor.
And since X32 with the slightly thicker shell than the X40 it should mean that you'll get a really beefy processor in there, opposed to the X40 using the ULV and the LV processors. Meaning it'll clock it at CPU speeds of the T4x series, instead of the 1.0Ghz - 1.3Ghz of the X40.
And I wouldn't worry about the X41 turning into a tablet. There's no way IBM would call it an X41. The X41 will be just another X40, with newer tech inside.
But that's not to say that there isn't a tablet PC in the works, ready to come out with some other brand name / letter scheme.
