Are we talking about an X61 here?

Notes:
(*1) If Windows 7 (64-bit) or Vista (64-bit) is already installed on your system, then you must use the bootable CD ISO format of this BIOS update.

If you don't have the required ultrabay optical drive (the BIOS update CD will not work with external USB CD drives) then you might find this article helpful: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/BIOS_Upgrade/X_Series

The key is to use a 32-bit OS for installing the BIOS update. I just updated the BIOS in my X61T this way by downloading the CD, extracting the files from the ISO, and putting them on a bootable DOS USB flash drive. The operation was a success; the patient lived.

Just used the method of making a bootable usb drive yesterday and updated my bios. All you need is the HP program and the bios image.
