Driver Updates?

#1 Post by JohnV » Wed Jun 09, 2004 7:40 am

A question for all of you. When you guys update your laptops with new drivers do you prefer to go to IBM directly and download them there or do you go to Microsoft update or the actual vendor?

I always go to IBM for driver updates. I don't think Microsoft or the hardware vendors have tested the updates on ThinkPads.
Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!

As a general rule, never use any drivers other than the ones from the IBM website.

http://all.tpdrivers.com can make it easier to download all the drivers when you need them.

Also remember IBM Update Connector for the ThinkPad which seems to work quite well now in comparison to older versions.

I have had machines get problems after using the generic drivers from windows update so i would never touch them.

update connector and ibm (un)reliability

#6 Post by t41user » Wed Jun 09, 2004 2:37 pm

My seven month old t412379-dju shipped with update connector 5.3. It has never worked. It never recognizes updates and always tells me that my system is completely up to date. Some people at ibm have told me that this happens with some shipped machines/systems and not with others, and that ibm has no idea why or how to get the connector to work when it doesn't. I find that some of the people who participate in this forum know more about fixes and things than most people I talk with at ibm. Of course, my experience may be due to misunderstanding on my part or unlucky unrepresentativeness. In any case, when Microsoft wants to provide me with a driver update that it thinks applies to my system, and ibm does not provide the same or a similar update, for instance, sometimes I wonder whether I should trust microsoft (or some other source) over ibm.

Nope, don't trust Microsoft. You'll only run into problems that way. I always use the Driver Matrix to get my drivers. They highlight driver in the last month with red type. Most just unpack to a set location and then all you have to do is run the Software Installer in Start Menu>All Programs>Access IBM menu. It'll recognize if you have new versions of your software and drivers and take care of uninstalling the old drivers and installing the new drivers/software. The only exception is the wireless card drivers because you need to uninstall Access Connections before doing the new driver upgrade and then have to reinstall Access Connections (You can do this in a two stage process with the Software Installer)
