Please help with A21e. I'm ready to toss it out the window!

For some time now I hve been attempting to upgrade to Xp from win 2000. I attempted to do an upgrade but halfway through, the thinkpads just shut down. I then attempted a clean instal. The same problem. I have used both a burnt and OEM cd. The thinkpad worked fine under win 2000, it never shut down on its own. I also looked into reflashing the bios.

I downloaded the bios update from IBM, saved it to floppy, booted from floppy with ac in and full battery charge. The screen just stays black and the cursor just flashes at the upper left with no action. Please help, I am ready to just get rid of this thing. I never had this problem with the 600 series. I have done about a dozen with ease.

Any help, or links would be greatly apreciated. I know I'm not the only one who has run ito this. Thanks.

How far along does the install or upgrade proceed prior to stopping? Do you get to partition and format? Does hardware detection fail? Does it even boot the CD?

I would try, just for grins, to reseat all the parts like RAM, CPU (only if you really want to get inside the machine), internal cables, CMOS battery, etc.

I would also check the RAM to make sure it is truly 100% compatable and running properly. I know there is a free mem check that can run from a bootable floppy, I just do not recall what or where it is. I know somebody listed it here in the fora.

Try the install with minimal hardware, no extra battery, no extra RAM, no external devices like printers, pda, nics, etc. Just trying to rule out any weird hardware things.

Good luck

Thanks for your help Bob! I took your advice and I have it up and running. The cmos batt seemed loose so re-connected it. I resat the CPU, RAM and the mini PCI card. Before this, the machine was extreemly slow to copy the setup files for XP from the cd. It would take (no joke) around 3 hours. Then it would shut down when it got to the second part that states, now copying files to set up folder. Every time it would power off at this point.

After the I resat everything, it took less than 30 mins. What a difference! I'm on it right now and I like it more than my 600s but its definately heavier.

Taking this bad boy apart was a snap aswell. I had everything back together about 35-40 mins. after I removed the first screw cover.

Just wanted to thank you for the suggestions!

Luis.

Glad everything worked out for you and glad that I could help.

You mention that you have multiple 600s, would you be willing to part with one?

Sorry, I don't have any extra for sale at the moment. I usually buy them and rebuild them for sutdents. Thats why I mentioned that I have been through a bunch.

I was wanting to get another 600 to play with OS/2 among other things. So, I need the whole shebang, as it were. ;-)

I'll see what I have kicking around .. I think I have a complete 600 but she may need a keyboard or battery pack.
