T42p running Windows 7

#1 Post by enakje » Tue Dec 01, 2009 6:44 pm

Hello everyone.

I just upgraded my T42p from XP to Windows 7 last night. It works very well.
Specs:
IBM T42p
14.1" 1400x1050
1GB ram
60GB hard drive
128MB ATI FireGL
Wireless 2100 3B

After Windows 7 finishes installing run the Windows update (the ethernet port works out of the box). Windows Update installs driver for Wireless and graphics card. After this Aero can be enabled.
Then install the remaining Windows 7 drivers from the Lenovo website (ultranav, active protection, sound, battery maximizer).
Everything works (wireless menu, Fn+F7, sleep, hibernate, brightness, volume, thinklight, ultranav scrolling). The only thing that doesn't work if Fn+F3, which turns off the display.

On startup windows consumed about 400-500 megs of RAM, so I disabled superfetch, which didn't help much for RAM usage but ok... Performance is pretty good, I'd say on par with XP.

Windows 7 does seem to drain more power from the battery (13-15 watts) than XP did (9-11 watts) in idle mode. Disabling Aero did not bring the wattage down (I thought maybe the video card wouldn't be used then). I have yet to do some real world tasks to see if the battery lasts shorter than it did in XP.

All in all I'm happy, aesthetically it looks a lot more appealing than XP.
