Processor confusion
Processor confusion
Looking at used T60's I see Core Duo and Core 2 Duo CPU's.
Is there some huge benefit to Core 2 Duo over Core Duo?

Re: Processor confusion
Thanks. I guess the answer is probably that there is a pretty fair advantage in most things.dsvochak wrote:http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Cor ... 404.0.html

I agree with the author on tech.yahoo. It's kinda of dumb to name them the way they did.

Re: Processor confusion
Core 2 Duo is required for a 64-bit OS. I found that out when I tried to install one on my parents' T60 with a Core Duo...

Re: Processor confusion
Yes; the Core Duo is strictly an x86 processor. Plus; for the most part, it's performance isn't as good as the Core 2 Duo, I can't remember why... I think it was Cache...
The Core 2 Duo is an x86-64 processor, but after looking at the T60 real quick I think it wouldn't really matter. I don't think you'll really need to put a 64-bit OS on a T60.

Trying my hardest to collect Thinkpads, but college and being broke kinda gets in the way. However...

Re: Processor confusion
I seem to recall that clock-for-clock, the Core2Duos are about 10-15% faster than CoreDuos, given the same amount of L2 cache. Some higher end C2D models available for T60 (T7x00 CPUs) also sport double the L2 cache (4MB instead of 2MB) which may give additional boost in some tasks.

Re: Processor confusion
Yeah, if you plan on using the T60 regularly I actually would look for one with the Core 2 Duo. For the most part, they're often better in multitasking and the extra cache helps a lot with graphic intensive operations.
