T42 Sleeve from IBM JAPAN

#1 Post by valdi » Fri Feb 18, 2005 3:37 am

hi folks,

liberated from dell just recently ("FREEEDOOOM!!!" - Braveheart), i am now the proud owner of T42, 2378RBU. though it may not be the top of the line t42, it gives me all that i need from a laptop.

well, now i need to find a nice house (a sleeve) for it. i read the FAQ sticky, and looked into booq, pelican, powersleevz, shinza, and waterfield. personally, i did like booq and shinza.

BUT, i went overboard and surfed to an IBM JAPAN website (FYI, i don't know japanese). AND, as the link below shows, i found the perfect (IMO) sleeve.

http://www-6.ibm.com/jp/pc/goods/innercase01/index.html

NOW, the problem is how do i get my hands on this? if anyone of you thinkpad masters (please take it as a compliment. if it weren't for you folks, i would not have known how to go about purchasing a ThinkPad) here could teach me, a novice, on how to get my hands on it, i would truly appreciate it. :D

any suggestion is welcome.
i sure would like to find a good house for my T42.

addendum: should this question be moved to 'general questions' section? if so, could someone tell me how to move?

My Japanese speaking friend says that its probably not sold separately. It looks like a component of another case, but we had a look around the cases available on the Japan IBM site, but we couldn't identify which one it came from.

Thank you, ZZYSS. I wish I had a Japanese speaking friend. Thanks to MJBAUER, I was able to translate most of the information on the website. And, I guess IBM Japan does not sell the sleeves separately.

Well, I'm gonna try to find an e-mail address, and ask IBM Japan if any arrangements could be made for people living outside Japan.

Again, thank you, ZZYSS and MJBAUER. :D

That's a nice sleeve!! I want one now, too!

I wasn't able to tell from that site, but is there also one for the 15" T42s? the picture shows a 14" T42 in the sleeve, and it looks like it just barely fits...don't know if that same sleeve would take a 15 incher or not.

i really love this sleeve. this is exactly what i want. I don't need one with power adapter, cords pouches....not the laptop to bring between classes and to put in my backpack to carry to school

Ditto, we need someone to pick up a stack of these from Japan!

after navigating around with the help of babelfish, i was able to send a message to IBM Japan, but i guess no one there responds to english. it's been few days, so now i move on to plan b, which is giving them a phone call.

and yes, i sometimes i go out of my way... :D

and yes, that's how much i like the sleeve.

I eagerly await their response as well!! I'm sure many people are interested in this case. Maybe we could place a large order and combine shipping to N. America to save money?

hello folks,

perhaps, some of you might have been waiting for a response from IBM Japan, so right to the point. i got an email response from IBM Japan! and wow, i'm just amazed at IBM's service, whether it be Canada, USA, or even Japan! below is the email response that i got (though no information/words were taken out, i had to do some editing for your viewing pleasure):

-----------

From: IBM Japan Webmaster <WEBMASTER@jp.ibm.com>
Date: 2005 February 21, 12:23:19 AM
To: yhleebeta@hotmail.com
Subject: Answer from IBM webmaster

[ Answer to your question ]
Thank you for contacting IBM Japan.

I am afraid but the ThinkPad case which you request is not for sale.
This case is attached to ThinkPad T Series as a giveaway
during campaigns at our shopping site.

We are sorry that we did not meet your expectation.

About the case for ThinkPad that you can order in Japanese shoppig site,
please look at web-site as follows.

"Carring Case for ThinkPad"(Sorry in Japanese)
http://www-605.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/store ... d=13875930

In addition, we do not ship international orders outside Japan.
However, online shopping is available all around the World,
and "ibm.com" is pleased to accept orders from within the final
destination country.
Please contact "ibm.com" in your country.

[IBM Directory of Worldwide Contacts-Canada]
http://www.ibm.com/planetwide/ca/

-----------

so, from what i gather, i guess there is no way for me, who lives outside japan, to get one of these sleeves. i did check out the link, but there was no sleeve in the "Carring Case for ThinkPad" section of IBM Japan.

unless Bill could help me (and those of us who have posted their wish for the IBM Japan ThinkPad sleeve), my quest to get my hands on the sleeve ends here.

if i only knew the factory that made the sleeve, perhaps there might be a chance, but even so, i think only Bill could help us, since he is an "IBM authorized dealer" (please correct me if i am wrong).

could you help us Bill?

Browsing a google-translated site is not easy. But it appears IBM Japan sells ipods, with the description:

"Now, the peripheral device is funny! It closes up the PC strengthening gear of popularity! The male of the store manager be completed." Amen.

I don't see what's that great about that sleeve. I think my Waterfield SleeveCase is just as good, if not better than it. I smell IBM fanboys.

LOL,

it is a little silly how we all get so worked up over something like this. But the fact is it looks like a very nice sleeve. For one, it's tailor-made for the T42 - no other sleeve I know of really "fits like a glove" the way powerbook sleeves do (one of the advantages of not having dozens of different designs to accomodate. I love my Zeroshock for this reason, but being able to fit two 1200-page hardcover textbooks in with my thinkpad isn't exactly fitting like a glove :)

Also, it looks very small and no-nonsense, without a lot of the extra flab, bulk, or pockets that some of us don't need.

But the Waterfield SleeveCases do fit like a glove and don't have extra cruft (if you don't buy it with it). Take a look at lfeagan's review and pics if you haven't already. His horizontal model can fit both 6-cell and 9-cell battery perfectly and with the vertical orientation it's a tight fit, but juuust okay, with the 9-cell. From the pictures, the SleeveCase looks slightly more bulky, but not by much and it's probably due to the extra ballistic nylon cover over the neoprene (imho slightly better protection).
