What drivers? System Update or Windows Update [T400s Windows

#1 Post by Paul_S » Sun Dec 06, 2009 12:48 pm

I reallised that it is possible to install drivers via the Lenovo "System Update" Tool
or via the "Windows Update".

But the Question what is the better way/one.
Sometimes it is possible to install drivers vom both sources.
is this sugestive? i think i've done this in some cases. (are there any bad follow-ups?)

So how do i deside what drivers i'm going to install ?

Some examples for drivers from both sources:

Lenovo : Intel Wireless WiFi for Win7/x64
MS : Intel driver update for Intel(R) WiFi Link 5300 AGN

Lenovo : ThinkPad Power Management Driver
MS : "Lenovo - Other Hardware - ThinkPad PM Device"

Lenovo : Conexant Audio Features II
MS : Conexant - Audio - Conexant 20585 Smart Audio HD

Lenovo : Intel GM45 Display Driver
MS : Intel Corporation - Display - Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family

what are the better dirvers?
which should i have installed ?
ThinkPad T400s (2823W3R) + Windows 7 Professional
Cordless Bluetooth Optical ThinkPad Mouse (41U5008)

I did all the ones from Lenovo update first, then Windows update.

Some drivers are manufacturer specific/tweaked and thus you want to install those from Lenovo. Then you can do the generic ones from MS when Lenovo does not have their own.

sounds logical.

But sometimes it is possible to install both... you know ?
some disappear when u install the driver form the other source, so ok.
But sometimes it seems that u need booth ...

like:
Lenovo : Intel Wireless WiFi for Win7/x64
MS : Intel driver update for Intel(R) WiFi Link 5300 AGN
ThinkPad T400s (2823W3R) + Windows 7 Professional
Cordless Bluetooth Optical ThinkPad Mouse (41U5008)

Ah... That is correct. You brought up a very specific example I recently encountered. In this specific situation, it is totally optional to go either way. Some feels more comfortable with the Lenovo endorsed driver and some feels the latest Intel one may offer more features/benefits. I have tried either way and I could not really tell the difference.

As far as the driver is concerned, the Lenovo version is just a relabelled/fully Lenovo tested version from Intel. You can install either one.

Lenovo standard install does not install the Intel Pro Wireless software as Lenovo has the Access Connection, which will control the wireless connections. You can also opt for the Intel Pro Wireless software to manage wireless connection, or install neither one of them and just rely on Windows wireless configuration.
