Boss gave Ok to buy new Thinkpad, what should I get?
Boss gave Ok to buy new Thinkpad, what should I get?
Please pardon the generic question but as my last company machine is/was a T61, figured I would get some good feedback here first.
My current laptop is the 15" LCD T61 with 4gb ram and 60gb 7200rpm drive, running XP Pro
Would like to get a factory built 15" or larger LCD with ability to use more than 4gb (read 64bit OS) and solid state drive. I really do not want to move over to Vista or Windows 7 (have the Ultimate Edition installed on a couple of test machines and don't like it..) so would attempt to stay with XP Pro even if it means I have to have a limit of 3gb RAM on the 32bit operating system, so don't let the memory limitation stop you from recommending other options and yes, I do know how to enable virtual machine and how to run OS within OS and could install Windows 2008 Server 64bit and then run XP Pro inside virtual session(s).
What model should I ask purchasing and with what special options, what type of SSD, what type of other options, if any?
What would you buy?

Re: Boss gave Ok to buy new Thinkpad, what should I get?
how about Thinkpad W700 Elite with quad core processor and 8gb RAM? It also has option for 128gb Solid State Drive
Re: Boss gave Ok to buy new Thinkpad, what should I get?
A few things to consider:
1) You can run 8 GB of RAM in you T61.
2) If you want to stay with XP, you could install Windows XP x64.
3) If you have issues with x64, you could install 32bit Server 2003 or 2008.
I guess your T61 has a 15.4'' widescreen. If you want a ThinkPad with a bigger screen, then W700 is the only way to go.
Your other questions are too general. You don´t specify what you are going to use the laptop primarily for.

IBM Lenovo Z61p | 15.4'' WUXGA | Intel Core 2 Duo T7400 2x 2.16GHz | 4 GB Kingston HyperX | Hitachi 7K500 500 GB + WD 1TB (USB) | ATI Mobility FireGL V5200 | ThinkPad Atheros a/b/g | Analog Devices AD1981HD | Win 7 x86 + ArchLinux 2009.08 x64 (number crunching)
Re: Boss gave Ok to buy new Thinkpad, what should I get?
Someone is thinking too hard.
Allow me to simplify my question:
Suppose you are driving now a Lada and boss gives you the Ok to buy a new car. The question is simply "What would you get, given the chance to get something new?"
Translate that to my question of having used all Txx series and now latest T61 and boss simply says "Get whatever you want..."
It does not matter what I intend to use it for, perhaps only as a wineglass coaster, perhaps to throw as a frisbee on the playgound, perhaps to run simulated 3D modeling, whatever, just answer the question - ok ?
I know I can load up a T61 with 8gb RAM (did I ask that question?) and I know everything I can *do* to a T61, am really not interested in upgrading it since I have been given green light to go buy whatever model Thinkpad with whatever options I want.

That's funny and yet makes me envious!
Don't know beans about the newer models but good luck

W700. Simple enough? Then, when you get it, instead on tossing that old, useless T61 in the trash, or whatever you plan on doing with it, just send it to me
.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

You misspelled W770ds w8meg ram, 2 disks raid, quad duo proc, extra disk memory etc. Hth.Neil wrote:W700. Simple enough? Then, when you get it, instead on tossing that old, useless T61 in the trash, or whatever you plan on doing with it, just send it to me.

Don't see a w770ds at this link (click on the word "this")
I picked all possible options with the pricier model w700
If I missed the link, please post it.
