R40 Support - Need help

#1 Post by JAGeHomey » Wed Dec 09, 2009 1:28 am

Got a friends IBM R40. Cd rom doesn't work properly. I get a winlogon.exe error when the computer loads past XP load up screen. Doesn't seem to want to boot through cds or flash drives. I'm looking to format. Anyone got solutions?

The problem is, it doesn't boot up into the desktop. I get the loading screen when its booting up the OS, then when that's finished, I get the winlogon.exe error. and I cant do anything from there except move my cursor around.

Try running Malwarebytes from safe mode.

Wont boot into safe either. Get to the same exact area. No desktop at all.

You might be better off buying a floppy drive to boot. From a quick forum search I found this http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... otable+usb . It will boot only if you remove the HDD, but you want the HDD to format  . You might want to rule-out your cd-drive as being the culprit, check in another system if available. Then go from there. If you don't have another system to test, download memtest to kill two birds with one stone. If it boots then your drive works but it will also test your RAM when it boots.
