Who played around A3x rebuilted battery packs?

#1 Post by marco1959 » Wed Dec 09, 2009 8:28 am

Hi all,
I replaced the Li-Ion elements at two A31 battery packs.
No problems with the battery internal charger,it works fine without any "security" locks and
I expected that at this point the ThinkPad Battery MaxiMiser and Power Management fuel gauge needs some full charge-full discharge to recalibrate itself BUT...it works in a "strange" way...
Of course,at the first use,it "remembers" the old elements capacity so,during discharge,
it will reach 6% quite quickly, let say 60 minutes, that stays steady at 6% for about other 45 minutes, drops to 0% and stays at 0% for the last 45 minutes.
The new effective power delivered is around 50W but the gauge says only 4W more (from the old 20W to 24)
During the full recharge process the gauge stays at 0% for the first hour (25W charged but "undetected"),then reach the 100% during the next 2,30 hours but with no change in the showed capacity. (or just 0,01W LESS)
I tried to cycle it a couple of time more with no o little difference on the new capacity.
It seems that the software is able to learn only little percentage of the new capacity.
Is the battery capacity "calculated" by software (ThinkPad Battery MaxiMiser) or it only read the battery eeprom data?
In others words, does the battery sends voltage and current only and the Windows software does the rest (wattage calculation)?
Is there any way to recalibrate the fuel gauge?
Thanks
Marco

Im thinking all of my more or less settled after 10 charges/discharges. The cycles and start date are wrong of course, but the rest seems fairly accurate.
