T40 operating system

Hi all from a newbie, im just getting back into thinkpad ownership with a second user T40.

is it best to stick with win xp or is there a faster os for this machine? it will only be used for a bit of internet work both at base and on the move

Welcome to the forum.
With a fast hard disk (say 160GB/5400rpm/8mb cache) and 2x 1GB RAM, you'll be best off with XP.
Windows 7 will also work, but the graphics will be limited (no Aero), not advisable.
Of course, any flavor of Linux will run like a champ.
