Jolicloud (new linux-based OS for netbooks) on X31/X32

#1 Post by miggy » Mon Dec 14, 2009 2:50 pm

Has anyone tested Jolicloud Operating System Beta on a X31/X32 (or similar TP hardware)? I'm going to try it next week.

download: http://www.jolicloud.com/download
features: http://www.jolicloud.com/product/features

It's actually one of the very few Linux-based PC operating systems that make me want to try them ;) Judging from reviews, the OS looks promising ( http://lifehacker.com/5423574/jolicloud ... plications ) and it's not limited to Atom platform (as Moblin Linux is). It's more functional than Chrome OS (it runs Linux binaries, i.e. Skype) and it looks very nice (unlike Ubuntu Netbook Remix).

If you're only unhappy with the Netbook remix of Ubuntu, the X31/32 is fully capable of running the full version of Ubuntu. Same with Mint.

I haven't tried Jolicloud (Or heard of it until now) but I think there are plenty of Linux distros which are light enough.
Cell phones are my specialty. Got questions? Ask away.

I don't run Ubuntu. I don't want to run destkop Linux - I'm not a Linux enthusiast and I don't have a point in running Gnome/XFCE/KDE and using GNU apps. But Jolicloud and Moblin 2.0 are different beasts. In my opinion, they are not just Linux distros - rather a new Linux-based operating systems (built on the same core technologies as Ubuntu, but with different approach that leads to completely different user experience - if you're going to use your mobile PC to access the Internet and digital media). Consumer-oriented, web-oriented, more like smartphone OS than workstation OS. And being light is not their main point.

By the way, the Arch Linux documentation is much better than Ubuntu or Mint, there is detailed info how to set up a fully functional (fan control, voltage control, hibernation, trackpoint) Linux install on ThinkPad hardware - for example, http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/IBM_ThinkPad_X31

I have uBuntu on a t30 with a bum memory slot. My 8 year old was pestering me about it, so I handed the laptop and told him "have at". He was on the net and surfing in less than 3 mins. When homework time came around, I told him to fire up "word" in this case OpenOffice writer and he went to town.

Where am I going with this? Its not about the flashy stuff if you have to relearn the entire system. I dont want to learn compiling. I want to put it on, and forget it. My 8 year old can pick it and use it. For me thats important...your milage may vary.
