X301 - Intermittent garbage on the screen

#1 Post by gursk » Mon Dec 14, 2009 10:57 pm

My new X301 laptop is having some intermittent display issues. About every 6th time I bring it back from sleep, the screen becomes littered with small artifacts, commonly in vertical columns.

Check out the photos I snapped ...

Being patient and logging in doesn't help- only a full reboot restores an unmarred display.

I did al the system tests and all hardware components come out perfectly.

Calling support hasn't been ... supportive. They had me install an older version of the driver, which caused the screen to completely wash out, I had to use a Windows Restore point to get the display to appear with the normal color and contrast settings. They were completely uninterested in looking at the photos that better illustrate the issue.

Anyone else have any insight into this? Sounds to me like it might be a hardware issue.

Thanks for any ideas that might help...

I'm going to side with tech support and the people on the Lenovo forums and say it is a driver issue. Uninstall the graphics driver from Programs and Features then go into the device manager and uninstall the driver there as well. Reboot, then install the latest version of the Intel drivers.

Thanks visionviper,

I've posted a few updates to the other forum - unfortuantely using the older driver introduced a different issue, a completely washed out screen. As instructed by technical support, I replaced my driver (version 8.15.10.1968) with a previous version (8.15.10.1855), document ID MIGR-73678 and it resulted in a washed-out screen that was completely unusable.

However if, when I bring the laptop back from sleep and discover the screen garbage, I:

1. Unplug the AC.
2. Shut the lid to put the laptop to sleep.
3. Open the lid to wake it up.
4. Presto, no screen garbage.

So, this issue seems to be linked to the power state. More information is good ... still not sure how to resolve/prevent.

I had some similar issues about a month ago.

My screen acted up when unplugging an external monitor vga cable.

Nothing I would do would restore the x301 to the beautiful original screen. I called tech support, they were concerned it was more than a driver, but a hardware issue. Apparently I have read on one of some blog, that lenovos can have faulty screens, although that frequent to cause alarm.

I tired installing and uninstalling all sorts of drivers, but nothing worked.

The only way I resolved this problem was to completed reinstall windows from scratch. However if you have a recent full backup (which i didn't have) that was working fine before the screen issues, use that. If that fails, start from scratch. That should solve the problem. It has for me. However, if it doesn't, it might be a hardware problem, which I would send it back to Lenovo asap, to get it fixed.

Well, that's my two cents.

ps, what is your battery level like when you are waking it up from sleep.........I also get those screen issues every now and then. It seems that if I had it on ac, and put it to sleep, and then unplugged it, when I went to wake it up, the screen becomes garbled. I haven't tried it since, but will keep an eye out for these sort of issues.
I think it maybe a power issue.
If it persists, I will also send it in for a hardware check up, as I don't think that this is normal. My toshiba tecra machines, never did that.

OK, the older drivers seems to have resolved this issue. Thanks to all for your assistance!
