What type SSD does the W700 use

I am buying a W700 with a 320 GB drive from the factory but am going to buy a SSD drive separately with the intention of using it as the internal drive with the OS installed on it. Can anyone tell me if it uses a 2.5" SSD or 1.8"?

That's not quite true Harry. Mine came with a pair of Samsung drives and they are much smaller, about the size of an old PC card. They use an adapter to get to the 2.5" form factor. They are supposed to be SATA 300, and they use a smaller SATA connector than the larger drives. I have put these drives using the adapter in a 2nd HDD tray and it works fine.

FYI mine is the 2757 and the drives are each 128GB.

Device manager says SAMSUNG MMCQE28G8MUP-0VA

Curious if these are any good. They are working great for me, but I wonder if the Intel would blow it away.

Interesting, I wonder why the parts manual is wrong...or maybe just raided drives are 1.8" and non-raid are 2.5". It says 9mm in black and white...that is definitely 2.5". I am curious about the same SSD speed comparison because I have a W700 on my radar as a next purchase. The samsung drives are MUCH less expensive than the Intel X25 ones.

Actually if you have the serial # and the machine type I can tell you where to get the information. PM me your serial number and machine type if you have that info.

The order is in process and I don't have the serial. Machine type is 2757CTO. I wonder if the drive size type depends on Raid vs. Non-raid sytems? With raid you would need the smaller drivers I would think.

The Intel drive is one of the fastest, if an SSD drive is cheap its probably slow.

I have the same model. The 2757-CTR is the refurb version of 2757-CTO.
There is no reason whatsoever the drive would have to be smaller due to RAID?! I can't even imagine why you would think it would when so little research online gives the details. There are 2 drive bays, each will accommodate ONE 2.5" drive. The little bitty SSD slides into an adapter that essentially makes it the size of a 2.5". If you plan to upgrade to a skinny SSD, you need the adapter, if you use a 2.5" SSD then you are good to go.

I'm having a hard time figuring out WHAT you need to know. The drive bays are for 2.5" drives. Does that answer your question?

proaudioguy thanks for your input.

The reason I thought it might use the 1.8"drive was with a raid config you would have 2 drives and it might save space. I was trying to avoid buying a 1.8" drive and having it not fit if it needed a 2.5" drive but it sounds like it will work with either.

I don't have the benefit of looking at the laptop like you do.

I just want to give you guys a heads up.

If you are buying an ssd, please please please consider that not all drives support TRIM (garbage collection) and if they don't, they will severely degrade in performance. To my knowledge, OCZ and Intel are the only two producers of drives that support this. I know the Corsair drives also support this, but that is because they are simply re-branded Intel drives.

Win 7 supports TRIM (firmware v1.4 in OCZ drives) and there's just no issue with degrading performance.

Raid-ing these drives, Raid 0 as most of you would do, will NOT support TRIM and you'll also have to deal with degrading performance.

I do not know who the vendor is for lenovo's drives, but if they are not intel drives or have an indilinx chips, you won't be having a great time a year down the road.

They are Samsung drives, not sold retail as yet. I would expect them to support trim. Running Eraser every so often the way you would run a defrag on a normal HDD, would probably handle the issue regardless.

I had the MUP-0VA drive, and yes, it worked great. There is a newer version of that drive, which ends in MXP-0VB. I'm not sure however as to what difference it makes.

The Intel drive, if you believe the over one dozen awards in less than one year, are superior to almost every other SSD out there. The Intel X18-M or X25-M for either 80GB and 160GB have had a hardware refresh as well, called Generation 2, which does support the TRIM command. I still have the Generation 1 drive of the 80GB drives (one without the "garbage collection" as someone referred to it as), and after almost a year of usage, I mean a LOT of usage, it feels like it's still as fast as it's always been. I keep about 20%-30% of the total space free, which a lot of people say works to help keep it from going bad sooner. Does anyone truly know if it will be a quick death, or if old age, along with high usage, will suck the life out of a Gen 1 more gradually, so I can prepare for its funeral and order a replacement in time for an easy transition?

I just received one of Lenovo's brand spanking new Toshiba SSD's. Yikes, how exciting. 45N8203 is the FRU.

EDIT: Umm...actually, it's not that exciting. I googled the serial number, and what I found out was quite underwhelming. I sold it on Craigslist tonight. lol...Intel all the way! Make sure you look at what the speeds for SMALL files (4K option in most benchmark tests) are. That is the key statistic.
