I've replaced a backlight on a X61 with a ccfl from a damaged X61T LCD. It was fairly easy if you can solder but do work in a very clean area to avoid getting dust into the LCD assembly.

Remove the LCD and remove hinges etc. Undo screws holding the metal frame. Carefully slice through the foil tape at the base. Gently ease the frame away at the base - no need to remove it completely. Pull the two silicone rubber boots out (they slide along the wires on this model). Push the ccfl slightly to one side to gain access to the solder joint of the pink wire, unsolder. Withdraw the ccfl.

Reverse procedure for the replacement. You will need to obtain some foil tape to reseal the base or use kapton tape (normally available from the ccfl supplier).
