anybody stuck becaue of the snow?

#1 Post by mattbiernat » Sat Dec 19, 2009 5:45 pm

i am one of those unfortunate ones to have a flight from Puerto Rico to Los Angeles through Washington IAD. Despite the fact that the weather in LA is perfect I am grounded in Puerto Rico because it is snowing in the North. This is such a nonsense.... and they are not paying for my hotel! This is my return flight from Dominica, during the initial flight I was told by US Airways to wait 7 days in Puerto Rico because their plane broke down....

Wow...I can tell you that WDC is a mess. Last I checked the weather they had a foot of snow on the ground, and up to 1.5 feet in some spots in Virginia and it's still coming down. Good luck. Look at it positively, I could think of many worse spots to be stuck ..

I'm stuck on my mountain, but with fridges and freezers full, I'm actually loving it...quality time with my family.

Hopefully some of it will clear by Monday morning since I'm out of vacation time... :)

well the good part about me being stuck is that I am in the territory of United States, and that makes me feel like im home already. the bad part is that I also don't have much time for vacation. I am spending only 10 days in the States and now this is going to be one less day with my sister that Im seeing for the first time in 2 years and my aunt and uncle that i haven't seen in a year.

We have had snow in the UK, probably not as much as you've had over in the States, but here is the proof that we've had "proper snow" and not just sleet!

Yesterday afternoon I left home at 16:00 to drive to Hook in North Hampshire to meet my wife who had taken our neice skiing in the Alps for a few days. My wife was being collected from Heathrow airport by her brother. Hook is about halfway between Tichborne and Heathrow.

After two and a half hours I arrived in Hook. This normal takes 35 minutes. The snow was falling heavily. I was thirsty, peckish, and needed the toilet. All three needs were satisfied at a Tesco store. Enough about bodily functions ... I wanted to meet the missus and get back home.

I phoned my brother in law and he said that although the plane had landed the passengers were still on board waiting for a parking space or whatever they do with aircraft. So I said I'd go on to my brother in law's house in Wokingham. It is normally another 30 minutes from Hook.

3 hours later I arrive in Wokingham. The biggest problem was not the snow, but people driving real-wheel drive cars with low-profile tyres on icy roads covered in fresh snow.

Many cars had been abandoned. One was dumped on a two-way road just outside a village. To get past meant finding a gap in the oncoming traffic. That wasn't easy.

Eventually I arrived in Wokingham after 5 hours 30 minutes. My wife arrived 20 minutes later after a 4 hour journey from Heathrow ... once they exited the aircraft.

Did I get stuck? No, I didn't. My car has good tyres and I had chains in the boot had I needed them. The people who became stuck caused all the problems.

This is fairly normal in the UK and I have seen it happen in Washington DC where people insist on driving motorway cruisers with low-profile, motorway tyres on icy roads.

I'm stuck going to work because we can't get enough snow! That's probably not what you meant though is it?

Hi Emeraldgirl

Yeah, mid-summer here. Staff were wandering round outside the bar in Wellington yesterday afternoon dishing out free sunscreen - easy to forget after a drink or three! Only 20deg C but UV is at 11 (on a scale of 1-10 !! )

One of the (many !!) things you'll be missing by not using openSuse is the random "christmas theme" grub splash - penguins ski-ing down the menu and allsorts.

In fact there is nothing wrong with RWD and low profile tyres. The problem is when these tyres are not a winter tyres :) And of course if the driver is stupid to drive too fast on ice :)
