Hard Drive Dead?

#1 Post by drmacpro » Sun Dec 20, 2009 5:04 pm

It seems my hard drive won't allow me to install any operating system on it. I've Tried Win Xp, Win Vista, Ubuntu and even Mac OS X (don't ask) I keep getting strange errors part way thru installation. Is my hard drive dead?

It's a Thinkpad T41
512 MB RAM
1.6 GHz
40 GB IDE HD

Welcome to the forum!

Download PC Doctor for DOS, burn a CD and boot from it, then run full diagnostics.

So I ran a test and everything passed. Now it says "scanning the hard drive for defects and weak spots"

Now it scans a sectors and errors like this come up " Sector 65405 ECC Error"

What's this mean?

P.s Several of those errors have shown up.

That hard drive is failing and will need to be replaced.

It means that you have bad sectors on the drive. You can try to repair them using any number of utilities out there, including chkdisk, but my experience is that you'd better start shopping for a new drive.
Edit: George beat me to it ...
