X40 : hard disk ticks all the time
X40 : hard disk ticks all the time
I just got a X40 (2371-H9U). I find that in windows XP, the hard disk ticks
and the HD light flashes ALL THE TIME (about every 3 seconds) ---
even if I am not doing anything,
even at the login window when I am not doing anything
even if I shutdown the wireless.
The ticking is definitely heardable. I can not stand it.
Even on my old crappy DELL laptop, the HD is absolutely quiet when
I am not doing anything.
I hope this is all caused by windows XP. This means I can stop the ticking
by disabling the related program.
I shall install linux on this computer. I hope the problem goes away
under linux. Can anybody confirm this ?
Thanks.

X40 2371-H9U
This is what I recorded from my hitachi drive in a T42 (thrown back to IBM). Does the ticks sound similar?

My x40 did the same when I had 256ram, I upgraded to 512 and it does too, but not so often.
Let's go'n'restart

Mine does the same thing with a full 1.5GB of memory. The problem is related to XP and seemed to go away for me when I tested it out with Linux. I hardly notice it now but in the beginning it was driving me nuts.
