blurry video when lowering resolution below 1600x1200
My friend got a T42p 2373 and he says when he lowers the resolution below 1600x1200 stuff becomes blurry and it is unpleasant to look at. Is this normal? If not, what should he do?
Nothing you can do about that, because that's the way LCDs work - they look great at their "native" resolution, but if you use anything lower, they have to extrapolate the data (you can't evenly divide 1600 by 1024, for instance) and you're left with a blocky image.
Unfortunately, the hardware does such a bad job of this that even reducing 1600x1200 to 800x600, which is perfectly divideable, still yields fuzzy aliasing.
You might want to look at other options, such as increasing the font size, the in Display Settings/Advanced/General, downloading a larger-font theme or a few freeware apps that are available.

Thanks for your reply. Shortly after I posted I realized someone posted about this a few posts down, lol. Sorry about reposting. I thought I recalled something like this about LCDs but wasn't sure if I was remembering correctly.
Now I'm curious why CRTs can handle this...so I'm off to read up on it!

Good quality CRTs when brand new are TACK-sharp. Incredibly clear even at 1900 resolution. Unfortunately, along with all the other drawbacks of CRTs, they get fuzzier over time...dr.b wrote:compared with the native resolution on a tft even good CRTs are a bit blurryjoshc wrote:Now I'm curious why CRTs can handle this...so I'm off to read up on it!

There is another option, although probably not what you're looking for.
In the BIOS or the ThinkPad Configuration utility, you can set the machine to shrink the displayed image to the new resolution (while still running the LCD at native resolution.
Under the LCD section, you can set "Screen Expansion" to "Disable".

If I set my resolution to less than 1400x1050, I have the same problem. I have downloaded a trial version of a utility called Liquid View and am thinking of purchasing it ($30).

This software allows you to have the feel of a lower resolution while maintaining crispness of image.
