T40p - Video now shows garbarge on the screen

#1 Post by wnknisely » Sat Feb 19, 2005 7:18 pm

My year and a half old laptop seems to have an "issue". Came back from a trip tonight to find that the video screen had developed strange corruption issues when it awoke from standby.

When I reboot all I get now is flashing random characters on the screen and no indication that the computer is posting or starting the boot sequence.

I'm guessing the video chip has died on me and I'll be sending the computer in for service (or purchasing a replacement.)

Are there any other tests I should try? Is there anything else that might be causing this problem?

Is there a FAQ on getting service from IBM?

Thanks.

I had exactly the same experience a few months ago with my T40p. The system board has to be replaced, so you cannot avoid sending your Thinkpad in for repair. No need for additional tests, it looks like quite a few T40p owners have this video card issue.

same issue here - you need to have the board replaced. Good news - after that I had no problems - running strong now.
Thank you,
Gerhard
