X40 to X41 - can I just put the X40 HD in the X41?

#1 Post by dwilsonfl » Mon Dec 28, 2009 11:42 pm

Picked up an X41 on eBay tonight kind of by mistake (forgot I had set up a snipe) and don't need both an X40 and an X41. The X41 has a faster processor etc., so I could keep it but it needs a hard drive and battery. I have a spare battery but not spare HD.

Can I take the HD out of the X40 and stick it in the X41? I know some drivers will be different, but can I get it in and boot it so I can let Windows find them?

Thanks for the help

The hardware changes are pretty significant between X40 and X41. I wouldn't count on such a transition to work smoothly, and wouldn't advise it.
Current: X220 4291-4BG, T410 2537-R46, T60 1952-F76, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G
Collectibles: T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X32 (IPS Screen)

I was able to do a T41 to T43 a while back and it's the same sort of hardware leap forward. I just hate wasting time reloading everything.

Well, I think it may work, but I would think that the OS will get messy with all different drivers installed. I personally would advise a clean install to be sure. But if you hate doing that... :|

Hmm...

Maybe I could make the break to Ubuntu instead. At least then I'd feel like I accomplished something. (Other than just trying stuff I am advised not to. :) )

Ubuntu 9.10 works great on my X41. If you are not afraid of jumping on the Linux wagon, then go for it!

I had done this kind of hardware upgrade from T42 to T43 or R51 to R52 several times. The only thing that caused a blue screen consistently is the TPM. If you don't have it installed or remove it before moving the HDD, it should work. Of course have a good backup first.

Got it in today and popped the x40 hd into the x41 (2525-6nu). Took a while to get the drivers into it. Only issues now are the beep beep on bootup caused by the hard drive and a failed attempt to update the embedded controller.

Any ideas on the HD?

There are modified BIOSes that remove errors 1802, 1804 and 2010, but I'm not sure if it's allowed in here.

I don't see anything wrong with posting links to modified BIOS's as long as you also post a disclaimer which includes the wording "Forum.thinkpads.com has no liability with respect to the fitness of these BIOS files and is not responsible for any damages they may cause either physically (to a machine) or monetarily to an individual who uses them".
