Will the HD image from a T41 work in a T43P?
I am building a frankinpad of sorts. I bought a T43P planar and I am installing it in a T43. Presently, my daily driver is a T41. I have several programs loaded on the T41 that would need to be reloaded if I did a fresh install of XP on the "new" T43P. This would take days. However, if I could use the drive as is and just reload the necessary drivers for the video and finger print reader after it boots it would be considerably faster; or would it? I was thinking that all I would have to do is use the Thinkpad system update?
I know I will get the 2010 error from the T43P and that isn't a problem for me. Other than that I don't think it will be a big hassle. Am I wrong? The donor notebooks are on my sig.
Thanks

Assuming that you have a current backup of the T41 drive and/or can clone it onto another drive to put inside the T43p, then you would be safe from whatever happens to the drive during its reconfiguration process. In other words, I wouldn't try installing the T41 drive in the T43p system since I'm of the opinion that there may be some problems with the hardware abstraction layer (HAL) differences and you could possibly hose your Windows install.

The issue is that the HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) in XP is different for a T43 vs. a T41. I'd normally recommend that you do a fresh install but I recently read that Acronis True Image has something called Universal Restore in an add on pack. It reloads the correct HAL while installing an image...very slick.

We store our data on NAS's so most OS installs are not critical. I've simply moved Mrs' R51 HDD to the current R52. The only thing that caused a blue screen was the TPM driver. After removing that, this HDD image had been running in the R52 for over a year now.

Re: Will the HD image from a T41 work in a T43P?
A sysprep will fix it, the T41 image is APM based, the T43 and later are ACPI_PC based. The sysprep will ask you for windows xp key, which you should have one below stuck on the base.
Re: Will the HD image from a T41 work in a T43P?
In my experience you will get a 0x0000007b stop error when you try to boot.
There are workarounds however, not sure if sysprep will cut it.

I ended up just doing a reload from scratch. It will take a little time, but once done I shouldn't have any trouble. Thanks for all your advise.
