T42 running openSolaris 2009.06 - anyone doing this?

#1 Post by titianmom » Tue Jan 05, 2010 9:44 am

Hello all,

I posted earlier about running LINUX on a T42, and have been trying to decide which flavor to use.

So far I've tried Mint, SUSE (not a good experience... :x ), Ubuntu  and I'm now seriously considering openSolaris. I like it, but there are a few other things I need to check out before I finally decide on which to use.

I liked Ubuntu okay; everything seems to be working out of the box, but there are a few features about openSolaris that I liked better.

Anyone using openSolaris on their T42? Any issues you've found that make it a "no-go"?

Thanks,
Kim

Kim

The only thing I can say about OpenSolaris on my T42 is it's no fun ! It just works.

The choice of apps from Solaris is limited (sure you can find and install stuff from outside the Package Management app but potential issues with dependencies).

And make sure you read the install requirements, e.g. it needs a primary partition to create its own FS.

What problems did you have with openSuse? As you'll see from my sig, my Linux of choice.
