It's been a slow day for everyone in the UK today, caused by really cold weather, loads of snow, and everyone working from home ... in other words going to the local pub for lunch.

Despite all this, IBM managed to pay my pension on time today. So that is my collection for now ... apart from the tee shirts and things hanging in the wardrobe.

Down to the pub again tomorrow.

It beats the hell out of working.

Does a couple of thousand IBM 5081 punch cards containing a Star Trek game written in FORTRAN qualify?? I think I still have those card decks somewhere but they may have been tossed during one of my moves over the last 25 years.

I guess it all counts as IBM merchandise technically! The reason I have so much IBM merchandise is because I have a neighbor that works for IBM as a system architect for server set-ups and he gives me loads of stuff plus I have been to IBM Warwick where they have servers that host websites like Argos etc!!!!

Around here, if you don't have a Think pad, it all counts for nothing.... :BAAAD!:

I've got a set of four IBM beer can insulators. You know those foam things you put on the can so the can stays cold longer and your fingers don't freeze on the can. They have the IBM logo on them and the colors are red, green, blue, and yellow.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

I've daydreamed about a line of "Thinkwear" beyond t-shirts and caps, but sadly Lenovo doesn't have the imagination I do.

Just imagine it....black button down shirts with red buttons. Black jeans with red button fly's. Black blazers with metallic red cuff buttons. However, I could see how it would end badly. Clothing lines spawn accessories like cologne, skin care products etc. Black cologne and suntan lotion could be misinterpreted.

Speaking of the promotional items, did you know they have brandable condoms too?

Think, indeed...

Other than the TRS-80 part of the collection (I even have a Whiz Kids comic book!) I try to limit the collectibles to stuff I can actually use with the ThinkPad, and it's not IBM only, but also Tandy and Microsoft.

I have MS-DOS 3.2, PC-DOS 5.0, MS-DOS 5.0 with DeskMate 3.69, DeskMate 3.02, MS-DOS 6.22 on 5.25" and 3.5", Windows 3.1, 3.11, Workgroups add in, 3.11 for Workgroups, 95 on Floppy and CD, NT4, 95B, 98SE upgrade, full, and boot floppy, 2000 pro, and ME.

And that's just the operating systems/environments.

Oh, and there's this icon set:

I do want to get a "Think pad"...sort of. The TransNote is the perfect modern version.

Since this question was asked I keep finding things with IBM written on it. I have a plastic portfolio, a golf umbrella, two caps, a set of tools (knife and pliers), polo shirts, a plastic think pad cover (not a thinkpad cover ... the old fashioned paper think pad), golf balls, a holder for notes, etc.

I also have a set of the old intelligence tests from the 1960s that were used to decide who joined and who was rejected. A much better system than academic qualification, IMO.

Think about it. Those that could think, and solve problems, got in. Those with a PHD in something but couldn't solve a problem were rejected. Quite a simple but efficient process.

Unfortunately that process was kicked out and IBM only hired academics. We only have to look at what happened from there onwards.

killer, that is fascinating. I would love to see the contents of those tests. As a computer science college student, I have spent hours reading about how necessary degrees actually are. I wish I lived in those days when a person without a degree could make a decent living, unlike today's world where one needs a degree for almost anything.

@automobus: The tests are in a box somewhere in my loft. However, from memory, the tests are; numerical progression, alphabetic progression, and diagramatic progression.

I grew up in a world where only a few people went to university. It was normal for people to start work at 16. For practical or technical jobs there were apprenticeship schemes. For law, accountancy, surveying, etc., it was customary to take articles (a trainee was articled, in other words signed up to, a particular partner until professional examinations were successfully completed.

IBM used a basic and very common sense approach which was to interview a candidate and then give them an intelligence test. If they passed both then they were offered a job. Salary was improved if one achieved examination results; either academic, or pertaining to the job.

All this changed rapidly after 1970. Suddenly it became normal for professions to demand university degrees. Nowadays it is necessary to have a degree to become a nurse. Perhaps soon it will be the dustbin men that need a degree.

Interestingly, in the UK, there are so many universities that used to be technical colleges. One wonders if standards are the same now as at the universities of the 1960s?

BTW, I forgot to mention that the lovely thing about the IBM IQ tests were that they deducted 5 points for a wrong answer and awarded 1 point for a correct answer. The tests were limited by time so it was important to answer only the questions to which one knew the correct answer. This sorted out the "right, let's guess" merchants from the plodders who, intelligently, made no mistakes. IBM's philosophy was probably that, in business, it is the people who cost you least that make you the most money.

Compare that to the modern view that it doesn't matter about correct grammar, spelling, syntax, and whether you achieved the right answer provided you wrote a dissertation ... which could have been copied from the internet or the local library.

When IBM used intelligence tests they employed problem solvers. When IBM abandoned tests and relied on degrees they then employed problem causers. Which would you rather employ?

In the 1960s we solved anything. By 1980 everyone wanted to have their ar.se wiped. History shows what happened from there onwards.

so perhaps, if i can find a bird sitter :parrot: for the eight birdies, and we each survive until i do, we CAN enjoy i lively and spirited debate over dinner and ale..

meanwhile i'll see if the wife person would have the time to invite you to a dinner while she is there repatriating her UK pension.. :)

Wow, I just got an *original* (first revision, even!) PS/2 mouse, model 6450350! Does that count?

I have another ancient (very early '90s?) PS/2 mouse around here somewhere. I really should keep the "mice, etc." part of the collection as organized as the software...

An original Model M.

Yes, one of the ones made by IBM.

No, it wasn't produced by Lexmark under IBM's name.

Yes, one of *those* ones -- one of the *really good* ones. :)
