Thinking of selling my 15" T42
Thinking of selling my 15" T42
For the 14" T42. My 15" T42 with the SXGA+ display and 9 cell battery is teriffic but I'm looking for a laptop that is portable enough to comfortably take to Borders, Starbucks etc and I have a feeling the 14" with the SXGA+ display will probably be more comfortable to carry around. I have the UltraBay slim battery so I'm hoping together with the 6 cell battery (so it doesn't stick out the back) I'll be good for at least 4 hours of battery uptime.
What do you think, good idea or bad? Will I feel a nice difference in portability between the two? Am I correct about how much battery power I'll have with the 6 cell battery and the UltraBay slim battery?

My 14.1" T42 is very slick. I take it everywhere. It is very portable and I believe a bit more thin than the 15" series. In some ways I'd rather have an x40 but it all depends on what your priorities are. Likewise I am sure there are many users here that would never give up their flexview for portability. If portability and speed are needed, I say go for it. If you need primarily portability an X40 fits the build a bit better but has some obvious sacrifice in screen real estate, performance and graphics processing. Ideally a x40, t42 and t43p flex all on the desk is the only way to have the best of all worlds

I have both. The 14" is significantly smaller and lighter than the 15", should be a breeze to carry around. The 6-cell itself lasts about 3.5 hours on lowest power settings, so I'd imagine the ultrabay slim will get you at least an hour extra.
I like the viewability and higher resolution of the Flexview UXGA though. If I go smaller, I'll get an X40 (once they upgrade to SXGA+ that is)

I have both T42 14" SXGA and a A31p UXGA (1600x1200) with the Flexview screen.
To me the SXGA screen is very nice in terms of both looks and resolution. I like the portability of the T42 and I'm selling my A31p.

I've got a T30 (14", SXGA+) and a new T42P (15" UXGA). The T42P is a bit larger but it fits in my case (Brenthaven expandable topload). It's about a pound heavier I think, which is no big deal in the grand scheme of things.
I do the Starbucks etc. thing all the time. The difference in portability between the T30 and T42P is negligible to me, but then again I'm 6'2" and 180+ pounds. The difference between either and an X series would be huge, though.
Only you can determine if the diff between the 14" and 15" T42 models makes that much difference.

The 14" is SXGA+ 1440x1050. It's generally bright and sharp, though the flexbiew is brighter (200 nits as opposed to 150-170 for the 14" I think). I'm a big stickler for high resolutions, lots of open windows, and small text, and 1440 is fine. The pixel pitch is defintely larger than UXGA 15" so things should be easier to read.rocketman wrote:Kenn can you tell me how you like the display on your 14" T42? Which resolution does it have and is it a bright sharp display?
The 14" is more "blue" than the UXGA. For example, the this forum looks like it has blue headers. On the UXGA, the headers look auqa or turquoise. I'm not sure which one is more accurate, actually
The Flexview has distinctly better vertical viewing angle. The 14" won't have uniform color from the top to the bottom if you sit less than 2.5-3 feet from it. which gets a little annoying - I constantly move my head to square up with the quadrant of the screen I'm looking at. It's no worse than a regular laptop or LCD of course, I'm just spoiled by the more solid image of the flexview.
Overall, the 14" LCD is great, I have no real issues with it.

I got an T40p (14", SXGA+), it is perfect to carry around and I value the high resolution of the screen.
I had a Flexview for some time. In my opinion the best display I have ever seen on a notebook.
BUT: if you want to be mobile, go for the 14". Battery lasts twice as much and you don't care about brightness anyway, because you will turn in down to increase battery life.
Usually I leave the CD at home, which reduces weight almost down to 2 kg including 9cell battery.
My best notebook ever!
I wish there would be a Thinkpad S30/S31 Centrino, I would buy immediately!

You might want to try a different bag to carry it in also if you do start lugging it to bookstores and such.
I used to have a standard IBM Nylon bag, and while it was nice for the notebook, it was not ideal for my shoulder or back.
Now I use a North Face Recon backpack, and it really helps balance and center the weight better.

You may consider getting an x31 or x40. I have an x31 and nothing beats it for portability. It's the first laptop that I take with me absolutely everywere I go...it's fantastic for the Starbucks thing...
I hook the laptop up to a 17" LCD 1280x1024 monitor at home so I get the best of both worlds - ultimate portability and good screen while working at home.
